2012 Olympics Qualifiers: India active from Round 1

The Asian Football Confederation yesterday announced the format for the Asian qualifiers for the football tournament of the 2012 London Olympics. And it with 35 nations out of 46 taking part the AFC has decided to create a new format. This means for our India Under-23 team that they will be active from Round 1 itself due to our low Asian rankings. And potentially tough competition awaits them in Round 1.

The Round 1 playoffs will see 22 nations facing each other home-and-away to determine which nations move into the second round. There the 13 highest ranked teams join the competition and once more it will be a home-and-away format with the winners of those 12 matches moving on. Round 3 will see those 12 teams divided into three groups of four teams each and they would face each other in a home-and-away format. The three group winners will automatically qualify for the 2012 London Olympics. While the second placed teams would face each other once more to determine the potentially fourth Asian participant, but the winners would have to face an African side to determine if they will also be at the 2012 London Olympics.
