Germany: Match of Legend after 20 Years Unification

A "Match of Legends" will be played on the occasion of 20 years of Germany's unification on November 20, 2010 at the World Cup Stadium in Leipzig. The 1990 West German World Cup winners will face a team of former East German stars to commemorate the occasion.

The 1990 World Cup winning team will be led by then captain Lothar Matthaeus and will feature winning goal scorer Andreas Brehme, Juergen Klinsmann, Stefan Reuter, Guido Buchwald and Thomas Berthold amongst others. The team will be coached by 1996 European Championship winning coach Berti Vogts.

Juergen Klinsmann is coming all the way from the US to be playing the match. Klinsmann said, "I look forward to seeing my fellow players, the coaches and staff from then. The days surrounding the reunification were very moving and I am very happy that we are coming together after 20 years to celebrate this day."

The East German XI will be coached by former national coaches Eduard Geyer and Eberhard Vogel. The selection will have former stars like Perry Bräutigam, Thomas Doll, Bernd Hobsch, Ulf Kirsten, Uwe Rösler, Heiko Scholz, Andreas Thom and Dariusz Wosz in the squad. But missing will be German FA sports director Matthias Sammer, who happened to score the final two goals for East Germany against Belgium on September 12, 1990 in a 2-0 win. Sammer will have to give the match a miss due to a knee injury.
