India Under-14 Boys off to a winning start in SAARC Tournament

The India Under-14 Boys opened their campaign in the U-14 SAARC Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Afghanistan at the Tokinosumika Sports Centre in Shizuka, Japan. Striker Krishna Pandit scored both of India's goals in the first half.

Pandit opened the scoring immediately after kick-off. The goal scored after only 30 seconds was the fastest goal in the tournament so far. Krishna followed a Amey Ranawade pass and chipped it over the rival goalkeeper. The second goal came in the 5th minute off a set-piece movement. Ranawade again set-up the goal, when he made a run on the right wing and his cross was directed into the net by Krishna.

Changing over, Afghanistan went all out. But Jerry, Amit Tudu and Amey Ranawade in the Indian defence stood tall. Afghanistan eventually managed to pull one back in the injury time. in a match that was played in two halves, each of 25 minutes duration.

Head Coach Sajid Dar said i'’s important to stick to the philosophy. "This is a good exposure for us and overall development stays the priority. We played in a 4-3-3 format and the boys stayed keen in keeping possession all throughout."

AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015™ Logo launched!

The Organisers earlier in the day revealed the logo for the AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015™ in Melbourne at the draw of the qualifiers. Designed by a Sydney agency, WiteKite, the logo depicts a stylised player, kicking a football from the east coast towards Asia. The ball also represents the Australian summer sun arcing west from Australia to Asia. The four golden bands forming the map of Australia represent the four host cities. The design is completed by the Australia 2015 script, in a relaxed personal hand-written style.

Michael Brown, CEO of the Local Organising Committee said that the logo reflects an event that will be a festival of football.

"It will be celebrated in January, the height of the Australian summer holiday season, so the colour palette is warm, festive and embracing of all participants from across Asia," he said.

"The logo needed to embody the values of the competition, represent the host nation and most importantly excite and connect fans, teams and stakeholders. We believe the designers have done a great job in achieving all three aims," Michael Brown ended.

Lutz Pfannenstiel: I've heard about Subrata Pal's potential

On the second day of the AIFF organized Goalkeeping Course, 'Art of German Goalkeeping' the course instructor Lutz Pfannenstiel spoke about an Indian Goalkeeper, Subrata Pal.

The buzz in the classroom amongst the participants was unmistakable. Lutz Pfannenstiel clarified, "I know, I know… I am talking about his stint with RB Leipzig in Germany."

To the surprise of the participants, Lutz Pfannenstiel knew quite a bit about Subrata Pal but that is not uncommon for a scout like Lutz who has been a personal friend of mine for many, many years and he has been briefed about Indian football by me before he left.

Lutz pointed out that Subrata's stint with the German outfit in division four (Regionalliga Nordost) was a very fruitful one and assured that the standard of the fourth tier in Germany is as good as the Premier League in other parts of the world.

"I got good reviews about him (Subrata). The standard in the German fourth division League is very high I can assure you that. So his stint with Rasen Ballsport Leipzig must have been very good. I've heard about his potential. The standard in Germany is very high and level of competition stays intense."

He continued as the coaches listened. "Germany is the place for goalkeepers! So Pal's training could only have gone in one direction… that is good."

The two-hour long theory session also saw Pfannenstiel stress on the importance and transformation of equipments of a goalkeeper, training methods and so on. Videos were shown to the participants to explain the drills they need to perform in their next practical session.

Speaking on the transformation of equipments Pfannenstiel said, "The equipments of a goalkeeper has changed over the years. From the ball which swings a lot now than probably ten years back, to their gloves, everything has changed. A goalkeeper of the 80's would find life difficult nowadays."

"The need for good quality equipments is paramount. In Africa you don't find good goalkeepers. The reason is that kids who choose goalkeeping have harrowing experience standing under the bar. The grounds are full of stones and they are the ones who have to do the diving. So naturally they don't want to do it again. This is where good quality kits come into play."

Pfannenstiel also pointed out some features of how coaches should train their goalkeepers. "A goalkeeper trains alone with his coach. He is in that way separated from the main team's training. But the Head Coach stays the most important. A goalkeeper’s training is always special," Lutz said.

"If you are a National Team Goalkeeping Coach you have limited time with your goalkeepers. So you have to out your training plan in a nutshell. But if you are with a club you have time and this is where club keeper training comes into the fray."

2015 AFC Asian Cup: Draw for Qualifiers are out!

The road to AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015™ became clearer on Tuesday as the Preliminary Draw for Asia's biggest football event was conducted in Melbourne. Twenty teams were drawn into five groups of four teams each. Teams will play home and away against each of their group opponents between February 2013 and March 2014.

The winner and runners-up from each group will qualify for the AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015™ Finals along with the best third-placed team from among all the groups. These 11 teams will join automatic qualifiers hosts Australia, defending champions Japan, South Korea, North Korea (2012 AFC Challenge Cup winner) along with the winner of the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup.

The Asian Football Confederation has decided to simply the qualifiers and only accommodate 20 teams in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers instead of all nations like in the past. This also means that India won't be playing in the qualifiers.

"The preliminary draw has thrown up some great contests, and we are sure to see some exciting matches over the next 18 months," said AFC Acting President Zhang Jilong. "We're thrilled that AFC's newest member, Australia, will be hosting Asia's flagship national team competition for the first time."

Frank Lowy, Chairman of Football Federation Australia and the Local Organising Committee said that Australia was determined to deliver the best Asian Cup yet and promised a festival of football!

"This will be the largest football competition ever staged in our country. It will be a feast of international football, and we"re confident that Australians will get behind all the 16 teams, as we have shown for other major events."

Mr. Lowy also thanked State and Commonwealth Governments for their support of the event. "We are working with five Governments to deliver AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015. Their support and expertise has been invaluable," he said.

Premier of Victoria, Ted Baillieu, said that Melbourne would be a festival of sport in January 2015. "Melbourne will once again be the centre of world sport in hosting both AFC Asian Cup 2015 matches and the Australian Open at the same time. The AFC Asian Cup is another jewel in Melbourne's major events crown."

Matches for the competition proper will take place in Victoria, New South Wales, ACT and Queensland, with venues to be confirmed in early 2013. It is expected that tickets will go on sale in early 2014.

AFC Asian Cup Organising Committee Chairman His Royal Highness Tengku Abdullah Ibni Sultan Ahmad Shah praised Australia and the Local Organising Committee for preparations to date. "The AFC was impressed with the progress update provided by Michael Brown and his team. While there is much work still to be done, we are confident that Australia will deliver a very special competition, one that will leave a lasting legacy for the game both in Australia and across Asia."

2014 AFC Challenge Cup: India submits hosting bid!

The All India Football Federation has formally handed in its bid to the Asian Football Confederation to host the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup, which is a qualification tournament for the 2015 AFC Asian Cup for the second tier nations in Asia.

India in 2008 last hosted the AFC Challenge Cup in Hyderabad and New Delhi with Team India winning the tournament with 4-1 final victory against Tajikistan to qualify for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup in Qatar. But earlier this year Team India fared miserably at the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup in Nepal by losing all matches. The tournament was won by North Korea who qualified for Australia in 2015.

But the will to host does not mean a spot in the final tournament of eight nations at the AFC Challenge Cup. With 20 nations applying to participate in the pan-Asian tournament, there will be qualifiers set to be played in March 2013 to determine the final eight nations.

Once the final eight nations have been confirmed, only then will the Asian Football Confederation confirm the hosts for the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup though sources within the AFC say that India have good chances to become the hosts if India qualify for the final round.

Certainly it is a wise move by the AIFF to hand in its bid documents and believe that Team India gets through the qualifiers.

AIFF organised ‘Art of German Goalkeeping’ kicks-off in Mumbai

The All India Football Federation organised goalkeeping course titled 'Art of German Goalkeeping' kicked-off at the Cooperage ground in Mumbai today.

This first of its kind course is being organised by AIFF in association with the German Olympic Association (DOSB) and German Football Association (DFB). Former German Goalkeeper Lutz Pfannenstiel is conducting the week-long course which will comprise of theory and practical sessions, stressing on various positions of the goalkeeper and how the dynamics have changed in recent years.

Pfannenstiel, a scout for Bundesliga outfit TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, also spoke on the basic role of a goalkeeping coach and explained the difference between a normal coach and a goalkeeping coach citing examples.

"The position of a goalkeeper has transformed over the years. Now a goalkeeper has to be a good footballer as well. Manuel Neuer is the best example of a modern day goalkeeper. He is a motivator in the side," Lutz said.

"Shot stopping skills alone are not enough anymore. A goalkeeper needs to distribute the ball well and on counter-attacks he plays a key role in building the first block of a move," Lutz added.

"In the 2006 World Cup in Germany, Lehmann got the nod ahead of Oliver Kahn because Lehmann was more a modern day goalkeeper than Kahn, who was of course the best shot stopper."

Twenty eight coaches including those contracted with the AIFF are attending the one week course.

"A goalkeeper is a team player and a lone warrior. He trains differently as well. But again he is the motivator if the side," Lutz further added.

"Goalkeeping coaches are not like normal coaches. You see Jose Mourinho perhaps never kicked a football. Arsene Wenger was not a great player. But they are world class coaches. But a person who cannot kick the ball well cannot be a goalkeeping coach. In training you need to shoot the ball perfectly and in chest height for your goalkeeper to get good practice."

Lutz Pfannenstiel, who has the unique distinction of having been the only professional football to play in on all six Continents maintained that it is the responsibility of goalkeeping coaches to make their second and third choice custodians 'feel important'.

"A goalkeeper's position stays static on the football pitch. You can have two world class strikers playing but not two great goalkeepers. So for a coach it is very important to keep his second and third choice keepers happy and make them feel important. They should be fielded in Friendlies and less important matches."

The 90 minute educative session was followed by an hour of practical session where the 28 participants were taught relevant drills.

The list of coaches stay as follows

Tanumoy Basu, Mario Aguiar, Feroz Sheriff, Henry Picardo, Subrata Dasgupta, Abdul Siddique, Raghuvir Khanolkar, Pramod Brid, Abdul Quadeer, Premkanta Singh, William Koso, Mohammed Yusuf Ansari, Utpal Mukherjee, T.K. London has more world class stadia then India!

Last week I spend a couple of days in London and on my way in flying over London I had the chance to see numerous football and sporting venues from above. Then and there I realised that a metropolis of the size of London with a population of over 8 million has more world class stadia for football then a country of 1,2 billion in India. It was a harsh, but true realisation in the air over London...

While flying into London I saw and recognised White Hart Lane (Tottenham Hotspurs), the Emirates Stadium (Arsenal FC), the new Olympic Stadium in Stratford, Stamford Bridge (Chelsea FC) and Wembley. Only five stadia one could say, but as we had to wait for our turn to land the pilot unintentionally took a route close to these venues though I missed out on Upton Park (West Ham United), Craven Cottage (Fulham FC) and Loftus Road (Queens Park Rangers FC) as London boasts of six English Premier League clubs and as many as 14 clubs across the four English professional leagues.

The interesting fact is that these venues are brand new like the Olympic Stadium, redeveloped like Wembley or older one's like White Hart Lane, Craven Cottage or Loftus Road; but all these venues have a certain standard that fans can enjoy when they watch football or sporting events and clubs are thinking of further redevelopment or shifting to new state of the art venues.

In Indian football or sports in general we talk about infrastructure, but there is a massive lack of it. No venue for football in India is really world class with the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi coming the closest, but still after many millions spend on the stadium ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games there are massive deficiencies at the ground and inside the building before it can be called a truly world class venue.

Maybe the officials think about this and work on plans to change it or otherwise we will continue to have the situation as was prevalent at the 2012 Nehru Cup in New Delhi and the 2012 Federation Cup in Jamshedpur and Siliguri.

Infrastructure is one key element of sporting development...

A high performance goalkeeping instructor course titled 'The Art of German Goalkeeping' will be held from October 8 to 15 at the Cooperage Ground in Mumbai.

The course will be conducted by instructors Lutz Pfannenstiel and Feliz Imm from Germany, who are on a three week coaching instruction trip to India as part of a partnership between the German Olympic Association (DOSB) and German Football Association (DFB) plus their Indian partners All India Football Federation, Indian Football Association (West Bengal), Mizoram Football Association and Western Indian Football Association (Maharashtra).

The course in Mumbai is being organised by WIFA under the aegis of the AIFF, DOSB and DFB with the course open to AIFF affiliated coaches plus those from I-League clubs and Academies.

AIFF's Technical Director for Regional Academies Scott O'Donell would also conduct some modules of the program. The coaching program includes theory as well as practical sessions and the participants would be introduced to the German way of goalkeeping.

"This is a great initiative. This course will be the first of many such activities that will take place at Cooperage in the coming months," added WIFA CEO Henry Menezes.

Before coming to Mumbai the duo of Lutz Pfannenstiel and Feliz Imm have been in Kolkata (West Bengal) and Aizawl (Mizoram) over the last couple of weeks to do general coaching courses.

Sleeping Giant: An Indian Football Story: London Première a grand success!

The documentary film 'Sleeping Giant: An Indian Football Story' had its world première at the 'Kicking & Screening Soccer Film Festival' ( festival link ) in London at the Everyman Cinemas in Belsize Park on Wednesday evening. I myself flew across from Düsseldorf to London to be there for the première as I myself am part of the documentary by giving my opinion, thoughts and insights on Indian football.

The Everyman Cinemas at Belsize Park is a small, cosy, old fashioned little cinema and it was the fitting location to show the documentary for the first time to the general audience besides also having some of the protagonists of the documentary present, many of whom had never met before.

The story of the documentary has two strings, one which follows the two winners of the 2009 South Mumbai Soccer Challenge, Hussain Vahanvaty and Shaun Fernandes, on their six week training trip at Queens Park Rangers FC in London after showing how these two boys were spotted at the South Mumbai Soccer Challenge and then the second string being the situation of Indian football.

Director Daniel Glynn, producer Mat Hodgson and their whole team at Ad Hoc Films worked close to two-and-a-half years to produce the documentary and I have to say, the outcome is a great piece of filmography!

After the screening première there was a Q&A session moderated by renowned British Indian journalist Mihir Bose which included director Daniel Glynn, producer Mat Hodgson, QPR youth coaches Steve Gallen and Marc Bircham besides myself, all who have something to do with the documentary. We did go into a little more detail about the Indian football though having little time to discuss it then taking about Indian football's situation could go on and on.

I thoroughly enjoyed being there for the première meeting a lot of old friends and making new one's and I can only recommend everything who is interested in Indian football or maybe even not, to watch the documentary.

VIDEO: No Indian Super Cup in 2012

This season there will be no Indian Super Cup due to lack of sponsorship as per the AIFF and I-League sources to Bengali sports program XtraTime. Normally I-League winners Dempo SC and Salgaocar FC as Federation Cup champions would have faced each other in the one-off match.

AIFF signs professional contract with Indian FIFA referees

Indian FIFA Referees Pratap Singh, C.R. Srikrishna and M.B. Santosh Kumar signed a professional contract, the first of its kind in India with the All India Football Federation at Football House, the AIFF Headquarters yesterday.

This is the first time any referee has been brought under a contract system in India. The event took place as the two-day Match Commissioner and Referee Assessor Education Course ended at the AIFF Headquarters. AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das signed the contract along with the three referees.

Head of Referees Department Goutam Kar, who conducted the seminar, spoke about the significance of the matter. “It is an epoch making day for referees in India. This is a seven month contract which the three referees are being signed. They will get their monthly salaries and all other expenses except match fee will be taken care of by AIFF," he informed.

"The contract will run from October to May on a trial basis. After assessing its pros and cons we will extend it," Goutam Kar added.

FIFA referee Pratap Singh said, "I feel honoured to be a part of this professional system. It means we have to put in that extra bit on match days and do our job more prudently and with care. We are thankful to AIFF for choosing us."

Santosh Kumar added it's a dream come true. "We have got the boost to give our best and improve ourselves. We have been trusted with added responsibility and we are ready to grateful to AIFF."

C.R. Srikrishna maintained, "Our responsibility has increased. We cannot let AIFF down. I want to thank the Federation for thinking us worthy of the contract."

German Football Coaching tips for Mizoram

On their current trip to Mizoram, German coaching instructors Lutz Pfannenstiel and Felix Imm of the German Football Association (DFB), have stated that Mizoram can produce footballers of world class if the abundant talent among young footballers is properly harnessed, as the duo feel there was no reason why budding footballers from the Northeastern state cannot graduate to world standard players.

The coaches, who are in Aizawl to train local footballers and local coaches, were pretty impressed by the potential and high spirits of the young players.

“The potential is clearly visible in the spirited and entertaining game played by the young players," former goalkeeper Lutz Pfannenstiel said.

Lal Thanzara, President of Mizoram Football Association had requested Rainer Schmiedchen, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Kolkata, to provide good coaches for Mizoram, the Consul General promptly expressed keen interest in exploring football talent in the state and took initiative to bring German coach to the state back in May 2012.

The world goalkeeper Lutz Pfannenstiel, who is the first footballer to have played professional football in all the six continents of our planet, said that for the past few days he and Felix Imm had been watching the local Mizo football keenly and concluded that the state has enough talent to make it to international standards.

The German duo is in the process of training local football coaches who will be participating in the upcoming Mizoram Premier League.

"We hope that some coaches may be inspired by what they learned during the training to try to find those same footballing truths for themselves and having found them, apply them to their own teams in Mizoram," said the German duo.

"The players need psychological, physical, moral, medical and sports support. This is how we do it back in Germany and there is no reason why we can’t do it in India or Mizoram," Lutz said at the press confidence.

"Our sincere thanks go to Lal Thanhawla, chief minister of Mizoram who paved the way for Mizoram Football Association to meet Consul General of Germany and our President Lal Thanzara, their efforts have paid off, not only for Mizoram, but also for India," said Lalnghinglova Hmar, Honorary Secretary of the Mizoram Football Association.

The coach education programme with the German coaches started on October 1 and runs until October 6 with 28 coaches from Mizoram attended the programme.
