It is quite a bit of work here in Qatar at the 2011 AFC Asian Cup. And by now I am known as the guy who wants to do his interviews in German as I am working for my home network Deutsche Welle radio. So I do pick out coaches, players and important people at the tournament to speak to me in German, which can be used back home in Germany besides also having done interview in Chinese, Farsi and Bengali for our other departments.
Amongst my work I have had the pleasure to interview Australia coach Holger Osieck and Iraq coach Wolfgang Sidka for a feature on German coaches in Asia, while speaking to former Iraq and Oman coach Bernd Stange who is an expert for Australian TV channel Fox Sports ahead of the India vs Bahrain game on the standard of Asian football and Qatar as 2022 FIFA World Cup hosts.
Amongst players I have so far have been able to speak to former Dynamo Dresden and 1FC Kaiserslautern goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer with the Aussie being of German origin; while also speaking to North Korean striker Jong Tae Se, who plays for 2.Bundesliga club VfL Bochum and has learned German in under three months. This in itself is incredible but now he not only understands a lot and can communicate, but also is able to give interviews in Germans which others even after living in Germany for years are not able to do.
I also got to speak to Japan captain Makoto Hasebe of VfL Wolfsburg and Hamburger SV teenager Heung Min Son after scoring his first international goal for South Korea against India. And my hunt for interviews in German continues with Osieck's Australia set to play Iraq coached by Sidka.
