Former UEFA Champions League finalists AS Monaco are currently bottom of the French Ligue 2 (Division 2) and the future of the club from the principality looks bleak without outside investment. Last summer after relegation from Ligue 1 an offer from Russian billionaire Dmitry Evgenevich Rybolovlev was turned down by Prince Albert II, but now with the club heading for the third division the opinion in the matter has changed in the city state.
Rybolovlev could bring in the necessary funds to strengthen the team to stay in Ligue 2 this season and then push for a place amongst France's elite clubs thereafter. The example that Monaco could follow are current French Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain. PSG are showing what positive effect foreign investments can have, then the capital club has been bought by the Qataris, who have pumped in substantial money to strengthen the squad in the summer.
If Rybolovlev invests then Monaco could stabilize itself in Ligue 2. Rybolovlev would have to work together with a new club president with industrialist and players agent Jean-Marc Goiran, a personal friend of Prince Albert II, a potential consensus candidate and former Monaco player Youri Djorkaeff could come in as a special advisor.
For AS Monaco currently it is all about survival. Their downfall is unparalleled in European football only comparable to Leeds United, then only in 2004 Monaco lost the Champions League final against FC Porto in Gelsenkirchen.
