Bundesliga: Suddenly the Borussia's ahead of Bayern Munich

Round 14 of the German Bundesliga was the weekend of derbies and at the end of the round defending champions Borussia Dortmund lead the table along with Borussia Mönchengladbach on 29 points, while early league leaders Bayern Munich suffered their second defeat in a row to drop into third but only a point behind.

The weekend had opened on Friday with Mönchengladbach winning the Rhine derby at archrivals 1.FC Cologne 3-0 to go top of the league. But less then 24 hours later Borussia Dortmund won their Ruhr valley derby against FC Schalke 04 2-0 to move ahead of Mönchengladbach on goal difference.

In one of the afternoons other matches, the Southwest derby between 1899 Hoffenheim and SC Freiburg, ended in a one-all draw with the evening match being a North German derby between Hannover 96 and Hamburger SV ending with the same result.

On Sunday there were no more derbies, but league leaders FC Bayern Munich suffered a surprise 2-3 defeat at the hands of 1.FSV Mainz 05, which denied them the chance to go back on top of the Bundesliga. In a close encounter the Bavarians simply couldn't utilise their many chances.

Many feared we could be heading for a boring Bundesliga season with Bayern Munich already champions, but now it seems it could be a long season ahead...
