The Shillong Sports Association will once more organise the Meghalaya Invitation Football Tournament. The 21st edition of the tournament will be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shillong from November 10 to 27, 2010.
The tournament would see 13 teams in action. Amongst them are the defending champions Nigeria XI from Delhi, a team of Nigerian players playing and living in India; and top local Shillong Premier League sides like Shillong Lajong FC. Other participating teams are Kolkata sides Southern Samity and Howrah Union; Kenkre FC from Mumbai; Chennai Customs; Manipur State League champions NISA and Mizoram Police. The tournament would also have an international flavour with Bhutan XI and a club side from Nepal set to take part.
The organisers have decided to divide teams into two groups for the preliminary round; while thereafter the pre-quarterfinals, quarterfinals, semifinals and final would be played on a knockout basis.
According to the organisers the overall cost of the tournament is around Rs 1,5 Million (15 lakhs). The champions would received Rs 150,000; while from the semifinal onwards there would be "Man of the Match" awards.
