Earlier in the day I was talking about the German Bundesliga and Germany's win against Brazil on Wednesday as a football pundit on an Asian TV station. And in that chat the name of 19 year old Mario Götze came-up a number of times. Be it in connection with his club Borussia Dortmund or his great performance against Brazil for Germany.
The Memmingen-born teenager isn't the model athlete that many see as the prototype of a good football these days. He is short at 1,76 metres and a Lionel Messi kind of player who has speed, technical skill and creativity.
German Football Association (DFB) Technical Director Matthias Sammer has called Götze "one of the best talents that we've ever had".
And last Sunday German legend Franz Beckenbauer told the tabloid Bild am Sonntag, "It is not possible to stop Mario Goetze. He has the same assets as Messi."
"There is no one playing better than him," he said. "He runs through opponents as though they aren't there.
"He is an instinctive footballer, just like Messi," Beckenbauer added.
And how is Götze coping with the ever growing pressure? Very cooly and mature for a 19 year old though he himself has said he has to get used to stardom as he no longer can simple go shopping or go for a movie.
And Germany hopes he continues to play like he has over the last year while getting better and better all the time.
