Yes, I mainly write, report and work on football; but I am a big Formula 1. No surprise having grown up in Germany and having seen the heydays of Michael Schumacher at Benetton and Ferrari.
Now the inaugural Formula 1 Grand Prix will be held next week at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, just outside of New Delhi and the buzz in the capital, across the NCR (National Capital Region) is already at an unbelievable level for a sport which many see as niche in India.
But the inaugural race has caught the imagination of at least the Indian capital, where F1 is the big thing at the moment. Be it on television, newspapers, outdoor advertising plus shopping malls and hotels everywhere you see something or the other connected to motorsport and racing.
I myself saw at one of the City hotels yesterday a real F1 racing car from champions Red Bull Racing, which everyone around wanted to look at and/or take a photograph off.
A lot of people I have spoken to are surprised at the level of interest, others are simply finding it great that a sporting event like F1 is finally coming to India.
One can only hope for a successful event and a great Grand Prix on October 30, but I won't be around as I will be back in Germany.
