AIFF to organise prospective I-League Investors meeting in Dubai on Saturday

After a successful first of its kind AIFF organised Open House Meeting for induction of two new I-League Clubs in New Delhi on March 5, a follow-up meeting for prospective foreign investors and European clubs will be held in Dubai on Saturday, April 6.

AIFF president Praful Patel after the first meeting was extremely confident that a minimum of two corporate-backed clubs will help raise the standard of the I-League significantly in place of PSUs (public sector units) teams ONGC and Air India, who will be relegated at the end of the season due to not fulfilling the AFC Club Licencing criteria for several seasons.

AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das told Gulf News that an attempt to "attract corporates with football vision" was being made to revive the game in India and provide the sport with a much-needed shake-up.

The Dubai prospective I-League investors meet was originally planned for last weekend, but it was postponed and will now be held on Saturday, April 6 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in DIFC from 4 to 6pm local Dubai time.

As per information coming out of Dubai there is quite some interest in setting-up a new team in the I-League with at least 15 corporate groups already registering to attend the prospective I-League Investors meet.

The background of the interested investors is currently not known.

Raymond Verheijen - A former Barca, Chelsea fitness trainer to teach Indian Coaches!

Three World Cups and European Championships! Stints with FC Barcelona, Chelsea FC, Zenit St. Petersburg, and Manchester City! This is precisely what renowned football fitness coach Raymond Verheijen brings to the table in his maiden arrival to India for a two-day 'Conditioning Conference for Football Coaches' in the Capital from Tuesday, February 12 to Thursday, February 14.

Author of two books on Conditioning and Periodisation, namely 'Conditioning in Soccer' and 'Periodisation in Football', the 41-year old Dutchman has worked with some of the best tacticians in the business like Guus Hiddink, Dick Advocaat and Frank Rijkaard, tasting success at both international and club level.

Apart from being the deputy to Frank Rijkaard for the 2000 European Championships in Belgium/Holland, where the Oranjes reached the semifinal, losing to Italy in the tie-breaker, Verheijen was also an integral part of the famous South Korean sojourn under Guus Hiddink, when the unfancied co-hosts upset Spain and Italy to reach the last-four of the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

He then joined hands with Advocaat to help the Netherlands reach the semis of the 2004 European Championships. He was also the right hand man in the latter's stints with South Korea in the 2006 FIFA World Cup and Russia in 2012 European Championships in Poland/Ukraine.

As an Advisor of Periodisation, Verheijen has worked with some of the best as far as club football in concerned. Starting with arguably the best club in the World, FC Barcelona in 2003-2006 under Rijkaard, Verheijen also went on to help the Didier Drogba's and the Frank Lampard's chalk out their Yearly Training Plan (YTP) – the mainstay of Periodisation. This was in 2009, when the current UEFA Champions League holders won the prestigious FA Cup under Hiddink.

With the Catalans, Verheijen soared heights winning the elusive UEFA Champions League in 2006, apart from two La Liga titles and Spanish Super Cups/King's Cup.

With Russian heavyweights Zenit St. Petersburg too, Verheijen tasted considerable success winning by not only becoming champions of Russia in 2007, but also the UEFA Cup and also the resultant Super Cup.

Manchester City (2009) and KRC Genk (2010-11) were the other clubs he has been associated with. Verheijen was also Advisor of Individual Periodisation of Wales and former Manchester City star Craig Bellamy in the period of 2010-11.

Verheijen reinstated his partnership with Hiddink for Euro 2008 as the assistant manager of Russia. The phrase was an important one for Verheijen. Chronicling his second book, 'Periodisation in Football' in the same year, Verheijen followed it up with the Dutch Football Academy as the Founder and Director in 2009. He bettered it with the World Football Academy (WFA) two years later in the same capacity. Hiddink happened to be the Ambassador in WFA.

In 2011, he along with Gary Speed was responsible for making Wales FIFA's most improved Team in that year, an achievement that was showered with lot of praise. Verheijen was also the assistant coach of the Dutch Women’s team in Euro 2009, helping them reach the semis of the competition.

Raymond Verheijen is currently the assistant manager of the Armenian National Team.

Verheijen will be conducting the Course at the FICCI Auditorium in New Delhi and there will be both theoretical and practical sessions. Coaches from I-League Clubs, private Academies and all AIFF contracted coaches would be attending the same.

International Football Arena Roundtable focuses on the Indian football market

The third edition of the International Football Arena round table in New Delhi was held at the Oberoi Gurgaon over the last couple of days with key players from global, regional and national football taking part to discuss Indian football.

One of the key points discussed was that if India gets to host the 2017 FIFA Under-17 World Cup it is going to boost the prospect of grassroots and infrastructure development of Indian football. Stakeholders of Indian football who gathered at the IFA Roundtable were unanimous in their opinion that public private partnership along-with key sponsors will help boost holistic development of the game. The roundtable was organised with the aim of finding solutions for development and marketing of Indian football.

Speaking at the IFA Roundtable, JĂ©rĂ´me Valcke – FIFA General Secretary, said, "While the size of India is a challenge for development of football, the key to success lie through the partnership of private sector. If the Executive Committee of FIFA agrees, India stands to host Under-17 World in 2017. It will provide a huge fillip to development of football in India." He further added, "We have engaged in a 10 year understanding with AIFF, wherein, we will be aiding the body with strategy, management issues, league management, club management and development of football. India should focus on creating a league which is viable, vibrant and has viewership. FIFA is happy with timelines that AIFF has shared with us in relation to football development in India."

Addressing the roundtable, AIFF President Praful Patel, who is also the Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, said, "India has never been a one sport nation. Today, India is the home of world cricket and we are certain that in the years to come, football will regain its lost glory. Our vision document LAKSHYA has been well received by the FIFA and we are working towards having our presence felt at the FIFA World Cup, 2022."

Plans of Chelsea FC entering India were discussed during the roundtable. Chelsea CEO Ron Gourlay said, "India is an important market for us. We hope to be visiting the country soon to initiate a long-term partnership. It's too easy for clubs just to fly in, play and then leave. At Chelsea we feel a fundamental responsibility to help develop the sport at grassroots level and leave behind a lasting legacy, so there would be much more to consider than just playing games here."

Speaking on Indian football, Gourlay added, "I have learnt more about Indian football during the IFA Roundtable in the last 24 hours than I had in past few years. A lot of what I heard points to the need for India to work on creating and developing the under-17 team which will then be able to form the national team in the future."

Marcel Schmid, Founder and Chairman of the International Football Arena, has been critical on current ideas, to bring Iconic players to the country. "It would create a short-term media bust and get some public attention, but it would have no impact on long term sustainability. Instead of paying high salaries to foreign players it would be much better to invest into training your own youth."

Taking a cue from Marcel Schmid’s comment, Srinivas Dempo, who is the president of the Goa Football Association and Dempo Sports Club, said, "The
cumulative spend by Indian football clubs of I–League stature is about INR 140 crore. The operating costs are as high as 85% with more than 70% is salaries. Unless we have more say in I–League and clubs are treated as partners of the property, the future looks bleak. It is now the onus of AIFF to engage in a dialogue with clubs to usher in a new era of feasible, profitable and healthy football in India."

The 2012 edition of the International Football Arena round table was attended by representatives from FIFA; Asian Football Confederation; the Football Association (England); German Football Association (DFB); Chelsea FC; All India Football Federation; Reliance Industries Limited; Dempo SC; Shillong Lajong FC; East Bengal Club; Hero Motors amongst others.

AIFF organises Platinum Jubilee function, honours former Greats

Ahead of tonights Nehru Cup kick-off, the All India Football Federation celebrated its Platinum Jubilee function at New Delhi's Taj Palace hotel last night with a grand gathering graced by some of the living members of the 1962 Asian Games football tournament Gold Medal winning squad, while others could not attend like the living 1951 Asian Games football tournament Gold Medal winning members.

Chuni Goswami, the captain of the 1962 Asian Games squad along with P.K. Banerjee, Prodyut Burman, Prasanta Sinha, Fortunata A. Franco, Ethiraj, D.M.K. Afzal and Arumanayagam were present on the occasion. AIFF President Praful Patel presented a silver plaque and a shawl to each one of them.

The evening also marked the unveiling of the Platinum Jubilee Souvenir and the AIFF Technical Director Rob Baan's Masterplan for the development of Indian football.

Praful Patel said on the occasion, "It's a personal honour to be a part of AIFF's Platinum Jubilee Year. I always maintain that managing football is far more challenging than managing the ministry. We have to work that extra bit to achieve our goal. We have completed 75 years, now we should set goals for the next 25 years."

"I pledge all of you to work as a football family. We need to emulate and exceed the feats of the yesteryears. I request our Dutch Coaches to help us achieve our goal."

Speaking on behalf of the yesteryear Greats who were felicitated, Chuni Goswami added, "I'm overwhelmed by the reception. I thank AIFF for this. The 1962 Asian Games will forever be etched in memory as Golden days of Indian football. But it's time to move ahead and not rest on laurels. Indian football is going ahead as we boast of a capable Coaching staff."

P.K. Banerjee added, "The AIFF has always supported its players. I stay grateful to them to honour us at such a platform."

As the evening wore on, Technical Director Rob Baan unveiled his Masterplan, 'Lakshya'. While unveiling the much-awaited doctrine that holds the future of Indian football, the 69-year old Dutch said, "This is not my Masterplan. After coming to India I met so many people, visited State Associations and attended so many Seminars and Camps. We interacted and the suggestions have been taken into account."

"I believe kids need to brought into football. They should be given proper space to play and be educated. The Coaches and the Referees also need to be educated."

"The curriculum of football should be updated. Take Barcelona for example. They often play without a striker. The dynamics of football curriculum has changed and we need to stay updated."

India Under-22 Team enjoying training sessions

The Preparatory Camp of the Indian Under-22 squad for the AFC Under-22 Asian Cup qualifiers is in full swing at the Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi. Head Coach Arthur Papas is stressing on the new 4-3-3 formation, and the boys are getting accustomed to it fast.

Senior India striker Jeje Lalpekhlua, who is still young enough to play Under-22s, said, "We have been explained and demonstrated the new formation and the players are getting used to it. The sessions are fun for sure," he said. Jeje, who is still nursing his ankle injury haven't had a full session so far and has been working with team physio Kaji Juyef Islam on the sidelines. "I hope to be training at full steam soon."

Papas, however, isn't in any hurry to rush Jeje. "I'm not desperate to play him unless he is 100 percent fit. He is a Senior Team player and when he plays in the U-22 team, it's obvious all will expect more responsibility from him. So till the time he's fully recovered, I won't rush him," he commented.

For the first time in the history of Indian football the practice sessions are being shot on camera which are later being analysed during team meetings.

Tata Football Academy graduate Simranjit Singh, who signed to play for Pailan Arrows next season, lavished huge praise on Arthur Papas. "He's someone who guides you and stays patient. It's nice to have someone like him," Simranjit, who hails from Chandigarh, commented.

On Thursday morning, the boys were divided into four teams and played between themselves. The squad will play a practice match against a Delhi XI on Saturday at the Ambedkar Stadium.
