23rd Airlines Gold Cup: Md Sporting champions!

The 23rd edition of the Airlines Gold Cup was played from December 21 to 26 at the Mohammedan Sporting ground at the Kolkata Maidan. And yesterday afternoon the hosting club in Mohammedan Sporting went on to win the title against a resurgent 'Techno' Aryan Club 4-3 in a penalty shootout after the match had ended in a one-all draw in regulation time.

After a goalless first session Mohammedan Sporting went ahead through a Satyajit Bose goal in the 60th minute, but only five minutes later Sporting's Gautam Kujur would score into his own net to give Aryan Club the equaliser. In the penalty shootout four of Sporting's penalty takers would score, while only three of Aryan's did.

Captain Habibur Rehman lifted the clubs first trophy of the season, while it was the third time that Mohammedan Sporting has won the Airlines Gold Cup. Besides lifting the trophy Mohammedan Sporting also received Rs 100,000 (1 lakh) in prize money. Defender Debkumar Sashmal (Mohammedan Sporting) was named as the final's 'Man of the Match', while his team mate Dipendu Biswas emerged as the highest goal scorer due to his semifinal hattrick against Janbazar SC.

This years Airlines Gold Cup was organised by the All Airlines Recreation Club with help from the Indian Football Association (West Bengal). The Tower Group had come on board as the title sponsors.
