The Indian Women's national team opened their campaign in the first-ever Women's SAFF Cup (South Asian Football Federation Championships) with a phenomenal 18-0 victory against minnows Bhutan in the Bangladeshi city of Cox's Bazar yesterday. The tournaments title favourites were leading 10-0 at the breather.
It was one-way traffic from the start and on average our women scored a goal every five minutes, which is also impressive at the international level. The star performer was midfielder Sasmita Mallick who scored seven of the goals, Ng. Bala Devi scored five goals and T. Tababi Devi netted four times while Pinky Bompal Magar and Amoolya Kamal also added their names once on the scoresheet.
In the other Group A game of the day hosts Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka 2-0 to also open with a win. India next face Sri Lanka on Wednesday, December 15 and then in their final group game Bangladesh on Friday, December 17.
