It was the perfect afternoon for German giants FC Bayern Munich as they beat FC St. Pauli 3-0 in a Bundesliga match at home at the Allianz Arena and after the match midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger announced over the microphone to the entire stadium that he has extended his contract by another five years, which resulted in loud celebrations.
An emotional Schweinsteiger told the crowds, "I think we have a good squad and my heart is red! It would be nicer to win the Champions League here then with Real Madrid. This is the best long-term solution."
The new contract had been signed yesterday and a pleased Director of Sports Christian Nerlinger said, "Some of Europe's top clubs had rolled out the red carpet for Bastian, but he decided to stay with us. I hope that we can win the Champions League in the next five years."
Over the last few weeks there had been speculation about Schweinsteiger's future after team mate Philipp Lahm extended his contract until 2016 and Schweinsteiger said he needed time to decide what he wanted to do in the coming years.
For the 26 year old signing a new long term contract with Bayern Munich would have meant that he would play his entire career with the German giants, if he wanted to move on then the next 18 months would have been the time to do so. And some of Europe's biggest clubs in FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, FC Chelsea, Manchester City, Internationale Milan and AC Milan were interested in the German international. But in the end Schweinsteiger allowed his heart to decide and he will stay on with FC Bayern Munich.
