Goan I-League side Churchill Brothers SC have appointed Portuguese Manuel Goncalves Gomes as their new chief coach in their quest to regain the I-League title in the 2011/12 season. The 59 year old is set to sign his contract next week which initially will be of one year duration.
Last season Gomes was on the verge of signing as coach of East Bengal Club, but due to some problems it did not happen and the red-and-gold would go on to sign successful English coach Trevor Morgan.
Gomes has worked as assistant coach of the Portuguese national team besides having the same role with Benfica Lisboa, while he has coached the national sides of Angola and the Maldives. He has also coached Portuguese second division club Estoril-Praia Sad.
In Asia he is best known for coaching the Maldives to a goalless draw at home against the mighty South Korea.
Henry Antchouet - The new Striker
Churchill Brothers SC seem to have also found a suitable replacement for Odafe Onyeka Okolie in Gabun international striker Henry Antchouet who is set to join the Goans from Portuguese second division side Moreirense FC.
Antchouet, who has 46 internationals to his name, has played in Europe for clubs in Spain and Greece besides numerous sides in Portugal. And Churchill Brothers will hope he can fill the big shoes of Odafe who over the last few years has often has won matches for the team with his goals.
