Bayern to honour Beckenbauer with Real match

German Bundesliga giants FC Bayern Munich later today late on Spanish giants Real Madrid in a pre-season friendly at the Allianz Arena in Munich. And the match is being held in honour of Bayern's living legend Franz Beckenbauer as his testimonial game.

Beckenbauer is now the honorary president of the club, but he remains the biggest figure the club has ever produced. Beckenbauer played for Bayern from 1964 to 1977, then came back as a member of the board, coached the club on two occasions, was the clubs president until last year before he how is the clubs honorary president. And in-between he also won the 1990 World Cup as coach for Germany after he had captained West Germany to the 1974 World Cup. Beckenbauer is surely one of the legends of world football.

When Beckenbauer left the club in 1977 to join the New York Cosmos there was no fitting sending off or testimonial game, which now 33 years later the current board wants to correct. And they want to correct it in style!

"What happened then when he left is not worthy of Bayern. He is without doubt the biggest personality in the history of the club," said current chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

A great season opening for Bayern Munich and its fans, while for new Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho it is a chance to see his squad in action against a tough opponent ahead of the La Liga start at the end of the month.
