HAL Goalkeeper Arun Kumar no more

I-League side Hindustan Aeronautics Limited SC suffered a major blow yesterday when their 23 year old reserve goalkeeper Arun Kumar died of a cardiac arrest. On Wednesday Arun Kumar had suffered a cracked shin-bone after colliding with team mate Ankit Sharma during a practice session. He got immediate treatment at the HAL hospital, but left hospital late on Thursday on his own will. On Friday morning he was complaining of chest pain, so he was brought as quickly as possible back to the HAL hospital where he died as doctors tried to revive him.

The talented goalkeeper from Kolar in Karnataka who first played in Bangalore for SAI Southern Centre had spend the last couple of seasons with Viva Kerala before signing for HAL last summer.

His team mates are in a state of shock, but have an important I-League match on Sunday against Pune FC in their fight against relegation at home. If the AIFF will consider to postpone the match in the interest of the HAL players will have to be seen.

HAL captain J. Muralidharan told the Deccan Herald newspaper, "This is just so tragic, we cannot believe it. He had got an injury (cracked shin-bone) a couple of days earlier during practice. So he was out for a few days. Then suddenly when I heard about this, I just could not believe it."

And once more after such an incidence the question is asked, why a footballers had to die so early. Hopefully his club HAL, the Karnataka State Football Association and the AIFF will investigate Arun's death and if a mistake or fault is found in the system of tracking the health of players or in the recovery from injury, then it will be rectified.

A real tragedy and nothing much one can say. My heartiest condolences to the family, friends, well-wishers and team mates of Arun Kumar. May his soul rest in piece.
