The Mumbai District Football Association organised Women's Football League is being held in India's financial capital for the first-time since the 2007/08 season. The complete league is being played at the Bombay Gymkhana ground with the Cooperage ground still under renovation following the installation of artificial turf and new stands. The renovation work has been given as a key excuse by the MDFA why the league could not be held in the last few years.
The Women's Football League kicked-off at the Bombay Gymkhana ground yesterday with the final slated for June 2. 13 clubs and teams are taking part in the competition with the clubs divided into two pools of six and seven teams. The top two teams from each pool will face each other in the semifinals on May 31 with the finals on June 2.
The revival of the Mumbai Women's Football League has come as a pleasant surprise to the women footballers in Mumbai then only 10 to 12 days back they were informed that the league would take place, which has resulted in teams not being fully prepared or players missing from action.
But as footballer Juhi Shah says, "It was very exciting once we heard that the women's league is happening this year!"
Fellow women footballers in Mumbai feel the same as they had to run from pillar to post in the last few years to get the competition restarted. Now one can only wish them a good tournament and that it isn't discontinued next season.
People interested to watch the matches and support the women can go to the Bombay Gymkhana as there are two or three matches nearly every afternoon over the next couple of weeks.
GROUPS
Pool A
Fr. Agnel Gymkhana (defending champions), Bodyline FC, Bombay Gymkhana, Steadfast Football Academy, Olympia Football Academy, Hugh Fernandes Academy
Pool B
Sea View SC, Kenkre FC, Companeroes SC, S.P. Academy, Titan FC, Magic Bus, Forerunners FC
