PIFA Summer Football Camps in Mumbai

Mumbai's Premier India Football Academy (PIFA) will organise two separate Summer Camps at Juhu and Opera House in Mumbai in the coming weeks for boys and girls.

The first camp will be held from April 29 to May 3, while the second will be held from May 6 to 10 with boys and girls in the age group of 6 to 18 years allowed to take part with interested children allowed to participate in both training camps of five days duration each.

The camps will be held at Juhu and Opera House in Mumbai with the 5 day course costing INR 2,500 and the 10 day course costing INR 4,800. Participants will receive a certificate for having taken part.

CII's Sports Management Capacity Building Workshop in Delhi & Mumbai

Sports management has become a high profile career option in India and abroad. One of the countries where it has reached the next stage as an evolving profession is Australia, who has led the way by integrating sports management in university business degrees. Against this backdrop, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in partnership with Australian Trade Commission and Deakin University, Australia is organizing a workshop on Sports Management Capacity Building in New Delhi and Mumbai.

The sports management industry is a growing arena in India with more and more professionals needed to run different sports, be it the federations, clubs, franchises, sports management companies and more.

The first of the two events will be held on Wednesday, April 10 at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi; while the second on Friday, April 12 at the Hyatt Regency in Mumbai.

Topics on both days, in both cities will be Overview of Sports Industry in India, Skills Gap in Indian Sports Industry – What is missing for the industry to be successful?, Sport Management in India – Linking Education to industry requirement, Review of existing Sport Management Academic Programs in India, The Deakin Experience and a closing session.

But there will be a mainly different set of speakers for the CII's Sports Management Capacity Building Workshop in New Delhi and Mumbai.

Mumbai's PIFA to hold trials for U-19 & U-17 Men's teams & their Women's squad!

The Premier India Football Academy (PIFA) from Mumbai will hold open trials for their Men's Under-19 and Under-17 teams as well as their women's squad in the coming days and weeks.

PIFA's Under-19 team plays in the Mumbai District FA's first division, the Under-17 boys play in the MDFA 2nd Division, while the PIFA Women's team play in the MDFA/BFRA Women's League.

Dodsal FC change name to Mumbai Tigers

Aspiring 2nd Division I-League club Dodsal FC have renamed themselves to Mumbai Tigers for a better connect to the football fans in the financial capital of India.

The Mumbai-based professional side Mumbai Tiger, who were formed as Dodsal FC in May 2012, have in the last few months shown their intend to push the limits in Indian football, which the Dubai-based Dodsal Group chairman Rajen Kilachand has given out the ultimate goal of the club.

The big aim of the season for Mumbai Tigers is to qualify for the I-League next season and then the club aims to play in the AFC Asian Champions League over the next five years. A very ambitious plan but surely a possible target.

Last week the new club name of Mumbai Tigers was registered with the national body All India Football Federation and the local body Mumbai District Football Association in a step ahead of a better connect with the Mumbai football fans.

Mumbai Tigers had signed seasoned coach Bimal Ghosh and ex-internationals like N.P. Pradeep, Surkumar Singh and Mohammed Rafi besides other established I-League players to show their serious intent in the transfer market with even talk of signing ex-Manchester United Mikael Silvestre of France late last year.

MDFA scraps Mumbai Elite Division due to lack of teams

After months of not knowing if the Mumbai Elite Division would be played or not, the Mumbai District Football Association has decided to scrap the 2012/13 edition of the city league due to lack of teams able to participate as 10 of the 14 teams have other commitments at the time of the league.

Only last week the MDFA had announced that the league would be played from February 25 to March 16 with only seven teams as due to fixture problems there would be no participation from clubs playing in the I-League (ONGC, Air India, Mumbai FC) and 2nd Division I-League (Dodsal FC, Kenkre FC, PIFA) besides the Indian Navy.

This meant the Elite Division would have been played with Western Railway, Central Railway, Mumbai Customs, Union Bank of India, Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers besides promoted outfits Maharashtra State Police and Companeroes SC taking part.

But then the Railway sides - Western Railway and Central Railway - pulled out due to their Inter-Railway Tournament commitments while Mumbai Customs also have an Inter-Customs tournament to play.

As per the MDFA an earlier date was not possible due to the renovation work at the Cooperage ground and non-availability of alternative venues. This left the Mumbai District Football Association with only four teams to play and therefore the MDFA decided to scrap the top tier division of Mumbai football, a sad first for football in Mumbai.

PFL/JFL: Saturdays in Mumbai will never be the same

The Premier Football League (PFL) and the Junior Football League (JFL) concluded yesterday at the JBCN International School artificial turf football pitch at Parel in Mumbai. The league was played over 12 Saturdays since November 17, 2012.

214 boys between the ages 5 to 17 years participated in six age categories and 42 girls played in the two age groups. There were one to two of talented underprivileged boys from the PIFA Foundation youth development program in most of the teams. Most of the teams were formed randomly by mixing the players.

The participants were offered free training during this period by the league training partners - Premier India Football Academy (PIFA) at any of their 14 centres in Mumbai.

This League is the second edition, the previous edition being played in 2011/12 at the Western Railway ground in Parel.

Director Anjali Shah had this to say about the league, "The league was designed for young children to show case and improve their skills, to stay fit and healthy, to socialize and play with new team mates and finally, for parents to spend some quality time with their young ones."

The league had parents as coaches and managers. The league was played 4v4 for age 5-6 years and increased depending on their age category upto 7v7 for 12years and above. This was primarily to let the players get more touches of the ball and enable them to develop their skills.

The league's technical Director Nirvan (UEFA/AFC B lic. coach) was excited by what he saw, "Simply amazed to see the improvement in the ability of these young boys and girls over the 12 match days. They are now passing and creating opportunities. They are all enjoying their game, it is not about winning, it is about challenging themselves to get better. India's got talent, our next step as India coaches and parents is to nurture the talented cubs into world class players."

At the conclusion of this edition of the league Mrs Sunita Narohna (parent) exclaimed "Saturdays will not be the same any more!"

Baichung Bhutia & Nirmal Lifestyle launch University Football League!

Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools and Nirmal Lifestyle have come together to announce the launch of India's first-ever University Football League yesterday in Mumbai.

The UFL will initially start across five cities — Mumbai, Kolkata, Kochi, Delhi and Bangalore with 16 colleges and universities from every city taking part in a league-cum-knockout format. Two teams from every city will then progress towards another round of football to determine the national winner.

The prize money for the winners is Rs. 1 Million (10 lakh) and the runners-up will take home Rs. 500,000 (5 lakh), while the total prize money will be around Rs. 2 Million (20 lakh).

For the UFL Baichung Bhutia's promoted BBFS have partnered with Nirmal Lifestyle Limited, a Real Estate Company with Italian sportswear company Diadora another parrner with an aim to expand the UFL to 20 cities by the fourth year.

The inaugural season is planned for October to December 2013 with the organisers hoping that the league becomes a scouting platform for India football clubs to source untapped talent, while also giving the university boys a chance to test their skills against their peers.

CII to organise Corporate Soccer Festival

The Confederation of Indian Industry will be organising the CII Corporate Soccer Festival with an aim to create awareness and connect the key influencers for football within the Indian corporate world with tournaments to be held in New Delhi and Mumbai over the next couple of months.

The envijaged format would see 32 teams per city playing in a 6 A-Side format with kits and refreshments to be provided by the organisers. All participating teams will play a minimum of three group games with match durations being of 25 minutes split into the half.

The New Delhi-leg will be played on the weekend of 23/24 February with the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium as the tournament venue, while the Mumbai-leg is planned for March with no date or venue set.

Corporate teams interested to take part would have to pay Rs 25,000 as participation fee with more information available on the www.cii.in website.

WIFA to revive Rovers Cup in July/August 2013

The Western Indian Football Association (Maharashtra) is set to once more organise the Rovers Cup next year with the help of their new marketing partners Sporting Ace after years of trying to revive the tournament.

The last Rovers Cup had been held in December 2000/January 2001 with 14 time record champions Mohun Bagan AC winning the final 2-0 against Churchill Brothers SC through goals from Jayanta Sen and Dulal Biswas.

The Rovers Cup is being revived in 2013 with a record Rs 1 crore (10 Million) as prize money. The date is also set with the tournament slated to be played from July 27 to August 11, 2013 at the then refurbished Cooperage ground which is set to open by the end of this year.

The organisers are set to invite I-League sides and foreign teams for a new start to the once prestigious Rovers Cup.

WIFA signs Rs 100-crore deal with Sporting Ace to develop football in Maharashtra!

The Western Indian Football Association, who run and organise football in Maharashtra, has entered into a strategic partnership with Sporting Ace Private Limited (SAPL) and they have come-up with an ambitious and dynamic blueprint to develop and grow football in the state with development and promotion plans rolling out simultaneously in all the districts of Maharashtra.

This historic partnership between WIFA and SAPL will see an infusion of around Rs 100 crore (1 Billion) for a period of 10 years, with the funds being used to aggressively promote the sport at the grassroots level, grow the bank of young football players, increase the number of certified coaches, spread gratification in cash and kind, spread football to every nook and corner of the state, bring football of the highest standard through the revival and creation of aspirational tournaments and ensure that every youngster will have a realistic chance of reaching the pinnacle of the beautiful game.

The partnership was announced at a press conference in Mumbai today in the presence of WIFA Vice-Presidents – Dr. Vishwajeet Kadam, Maloji Raje Chatrapati, Liaiqaut Hussain and Sunil Dhande. Representing SAPL were Managing Director Sagar Pol Chowdhury plus Directors Zulfikar Mohammed and Kingshuk Gupta, while also present were WIFA Honorary Secretary Souter Vaz and WIFA CEO Henry Menezes.

The initiatives outlined under the partnership between WIFA and SAPL includes the biggest talent hunt in Asia, The Mahayudh - targeting over 5,000 teams and around 50,000 players from across Maharashtra, revival of the prestigious 122 year old Rovers Cup, besides aggressive programs for Coach and Referee education with the objective of creating 5,000 certified coaches and 1,000 certified referees within the next three years.

"Nearly one year of research and ideating with extensive fact-finding trips throughout the various affiliated districts, has been undertaken before both WIFA and SAPL came-up with a blue print that has been deemed to be achievable. Earlier while most development plans would revolve around the bigger cities, first-hand information has made it clear that football is very popular in all the districts of Maharashtra and enjoys a huge following amongst the younger generation. This interest only needs to be channelized in the right direction, with the best facilities and just rewards awaiting those who excel. This is what the partnership between WIFA and SAPL is confident of achieving," said Souter Vaz, WIFA Honorary Secretary.

A lot of man hours have gone into coming up with a vision that is definitely ambitious but at the same time realistic. Mumbai's Nadkarni Cup to be played next month

The 106th edition of the 'RCF' Nadkarni Cup Football Tournament 2012/13 will be held from October 3 onwards at the RCF Ground in Chembur, Mumbai. 12 of Mumbai's top clubs including I-League side ONGC, newly founded Dodsal FC and I-League Division 2 sides Kenkre FC and PIFA-Colaba FC will be seen in action.

The tournament is a season opener for the top tier clubs of the Mumbai Football League organised by the Mumbai District Football Association. Defending champions are Mumbai FC who last year had beaten PIFA-Colaba FC 4-0 in the final.

So far the pre-quarterfinal and quarterfinal matches have been finalised with the dates of the semifinals and final to be fixed later.

German Coaching/Goalkeeping Instructors coming to India

The German Olympic Association (DOSB) and German Football Association (DFB) are sending two Coaching and Goalkeeping instructors to India for the next three weeks to run two Coaching courses in Kolkata and Mizoram plus the goalkeeping course "The Art of German Goalkeeping" in Mumbai.

The first course will be held from Monday onwards in Kolkata by the Indian Football Association (West Bengal) in which local coaches get the chance to learn the German way of coaching, which in the last few years has been very successful.

The second course will be held by the Mizoram Football Association in the state capital Aizawl. Originally planed for youth development coaches, the course is now open to all coaches in the Northeastern state as such high level instructors rarely come to Mizoram.

The third and final course will be organised by the All India Football Federation and hosted by the Western India Football Association at the Cooperage Ground in Mumbai from October 12-15. Goalkeeping coaches contracted with the AIFF, from I-League clubs and other institutions have been invited for the course "The Art of German Goalkeeping" then Germany has brought out some of the best goalkeepers in the history of world football.

adidas and Chelsea FC train Mumbai's young footballing talent

After giving Delhi a taste of how football is played the Chelsea way, adidas, the Blues from London gave young footballers in Mumbai an unmatched experience-cum-training opportunity with the youth coaches from the UEFA Champions League winners Chelsea FC. The adidas-Chelsea FC Foundation Clinic kicked off at Priyadarshini Park, Napensea Road in Mumbai yesterday.

The foundation clinic was preceded by a month long scouting program - the adidas Predator Camp, conducted across 8 leading schools in Mumbai, including Dhirubhai Ambani School, Campion and DY Patil International. This scouting camp yielded 150 of the best footballing talent from the city. The Chelsea FC youth coaches also held a master-class training session with the respective school coaches, sharing essential training techniques to improve talent coaching and development.

Speaking about the clinic, Tushar Goculdas, Brand Director at adidas India, said, "Football is at the core of our brand's rich heritage and adidas is deeply committed towards building India's success as a footballing nation. Over the last few years we have consistently supported grassroots programs to help the development of young footballers. Mumbai is all in for the adidas-Chelsea FC Foundation Clinic and we plan to expand the program to more cities to encourage aspiring footballers from across the country."

The clinic was supervised by Steve Winnet, who is currently head coach of the Chelsea FC Boys College Academy. Steve has had been coaching for 12 years, working in different countries representing the Chelsea FC International Development Team. Before working at Chelsea FC he was a full time coach at the famous David Beckham Academy in London. Assisting Winnet at the clinic are youth coaches Sam Hubert, Gareth Davies, James Phillips, Julian Hart and Kane Cowburn.

Speaking at the clinic coach Steve Winnet said, "During the first foundation clinic conducted in New Delhi this May, we were extremely encouraged by the skill and passion showcased by the kids. We believed there was tremendous potential in other cities too and were excited to come to Mumbai. These kids are amongst the most talented and dedicated young footballers that we have coached. We believe the right training methods can really help these youngsters improve their game to world class level."

5th Standard Chartered Indoor Corporate Soccer Championship in Mumbai

Standard Chartered Bank is sponsoring the 5th Standard Chartered Indoor Corporate Soccer Championship 2012, an inter-corporate tournament to be played at the Central Railway Multipurpose Complex, Parel in Mumbai on Saturday/Sunday, August 4/5, 2012. The tournament, for men and women, will bring together Mumbai's leading corporate houses with over 60 teams battling it out for glory.

The venue is being converted into a virtual soccer arena to ensure that some exciting, fast-paced format of soccer is in store for the enthusiastic corporate executives.

The event is being played indoors and special rules are being structured to ensure that the matches though competitive are fun. There shall be no goalkeepers or offside and the ball shall always be in play with the players taking the help of the sideboards to make play. 2012 Kingfisher Corporate 5s starts in September

The 12th edition of the Kingfisher Corporate 5s, which is a five a-side Futsal tournament for corporate India, will be held across five cities from September 2012 onwards. Bangalore-based sports management company SPT India will once again organise the Kingfisher Corporate 5s in the cities of Bangalore, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune.

Those corporate teams interested to play in the tournament will have to pay an entry fee to participate. For a new Men's team that fee is Rs 16,000 +taxes, for a Men's team which has previously participated it is Rs 14,500 +taxes and for Women's teams it is Rs 10,000 +taxes.

Mumbai: October 13/14

Is the upcoming I-League set to face venue problems?

The 2012/13 edition of the I-League, India's professional football league, is set to kick-off sometime in October 2012 after the conclusion of the 2012 Federation Cup. But the sixth edition is set to face venue and infrastructure problems of unknown proportions.

It is already known that Goa's Nehru Stadium, also known as Fatorda Stadium, in Margao is set for major renovation work ahead of next years Lusofonia Games. This means the stadium will not be available for the whole duration of the I-League and with the Duler ground in Mapusa still work in progress as it is getting an artificial turf under the FIFA 'Win in India with India' programme, this leaves only Vasco's Tilak Maidan as an I-League venue in Goa for the four participating clubs - Dempo SC, Churchill Brothers SC, Salgaocar SC and Sporting Clube de Goa.

Mumbai's Cooperage ground is also part of FIFA's 'Win in India with India' programme. There the artificial turf is already in use and through another FIFA grant the Cooperage is getting upgraded with proper stands plus a floodlighting system. Only as per WIFA CEO Henry Menezes' assessment it will not be ready to host I-League matches before November 2012. This means Air India, Mumbai FC and promoted ONGC might have to play their first few home matches in Pune or start with a number of away ties.

Now in Kolkata the Saltlake Stadium had its problems last season with floodlights which resulted in matches having to be played in the afternoon heat due to the need of daylight and to avoid floodlight failure which has been reoccurring since September 2004. West Bengal Sports Minister Madan Mitra promised the IFA, the I-League clubs and football lovers that the archaic floodlights would be replaced by the start of the next I-League, but that now looks to be in danger with the minister not willing to give any final date. This could mean further afternoon matches in the Saltlake Stadium in the new I-League season for East Bengal Club, Mohun Bagan AC, Prayag United SC and the Pailan Arrows.

The above leaves the I-League with 11 of their 14 clubs having stadium issues at the start of the I-League season with Pune FC hopefully not facing similar problems with their floodlights as last season and United Sikkim FC's home town of Gangtok not being off limits due to bad weather in the winter months.

It's a difficult time to plan out things for the I-League...

Mumbai Women's League: Fr. Agnel Gymkhana champions

Fr. Agnel Gymkhana defended their Mumbai Women's Football League title with a 3-2 victory against Sea View SC in the finals at the Bombay Gymkhana on Saturday afternoon. Angel Braganza's hattrick won it for Fr. Agnel Gymkhana though it was a close encounter in which Jenifer Rayyar and Laura Estibeiro had scored for Sea View SC.

The Women's Football League made a successful return on the Mumbai football circuit after a gap of a few years and hopefully the MDFA will be able to organise the tournament regularly from now on and give the women the much needed exposure.
