Germany's Manuel Neuer is currently one of the best goalkeepers in the world and surrounding his name there is a lot of speculation where he will play next season. Will he stay with FC Schalke 04, make a local German move to FC Bayern Munich or join English giants Manchester United? Loads of questions remain about his future.
Last Sunday Bayer 04 Leverkusen faced FC Schalke 04 which was also billed as the match-up of Germany goalkeepers Rene Adler vs Manuel Neuer. Manchester United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele was present to have a personal look at both keepers, who could be potential replacements for retiring Edwin van der Sar. Adler wasn't much tested, while Neuer once more had to show his class for his club in the Bundesliga.
But Neuer himself seems to favour to stay in Germany. He told German media yesterday, "I definitely want to win the Bundesliga once in my career! I can go abroad twice a year, once for a summer holiday and once for a winter holiday, but whether I need to go abroad to play football - some players say you do, but I see things differently."
This doesn't sound good for Manchester United, but it leaves the door open for Bayern Munich as Neuer isn't sure what development his home town club Schalke 04 will take in the future. Bayern Munich over the years surely will guarantee titles and regular UEFA Champions League football, but a number of Bayern fans are against the signing of Neuer, so Neuer is not sure if he should make the move south.
Meanwhile new Schalke coach Ralf Rangnick has already said that Neuer is a key part of his plans at the royal blues. Rangnick told local magazine Reviersport, "One of the main tasks for the club will be to keep him (Neuer) at the club beyond the end of his current contract in June 2012."
We will track where Manuel Neuer plays next season...
