Kolkata's Mohammedan Sporting Club have named former Indian international left back Aloke Mukherjee as their new coach for the 2011/12 season. The new coach hopes to build a strong team to challenge their rivals in the Calcutta Premier Division.
Aloke Mukherjee wants to take it step by step, build a team, get the fans behind the team and if things go by plan then the club would challenge for an I-League place towards the end of season.
The club has had an up and down 2010/11 season. They started the season with Syed Nayeemuddin as their coach, but he didn't last too long with Nigerian Tope Fuja taking over. After a mixed Calcutta Premier Division campaign which ended on a high as the club in the end finished fourth behind East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Aryan Club; they won three tournaments across eastern India amongst them the Airlines Gold Cup in Kolkata.
The 2nd Division I-League also started on a bright note as the club topped their preliminary group in Jamshedpur, but the club couldn't sustain itself and finished a lowly seventh with only four points from seven matches in Guwahati. The dream of a return to the I-league was once more not fulfilled.
