Desmond Bulpin no more Shillong Lajong FC coach

61 year old Scotsman Desmond Bulpin is no longer the coach of I-League Shillong Lajong FC, who relieved him of his duties. Assistant Coach Thangboi Singto will take charge as Interim coach with immediate effect and could stay until tne end of the season, if successful.

"Thangboi has been with the team since 2009 and has two and a half seasons of I-League experience besides a stint in the second division in 2010/11 season, when Shillong Lajong qualified again in the I-league. We have faith in his abilities," said SLFC General Secretary Larsing Ming Sawyan.

"The club would like to place in record the valuable contributions of Desmond Bulpin in the Youth Development system of the Club, which we believe will pay dividends in the near future. We thank him for his services and the commitment showed to the Club. We wish him all the best for the future. Our immediate goal is to concentrate on the next two home games and the away game at Salgaocar before the break."

After Sunday's 0-1 loss against Pailan Arrows in the I-League there was a feeling that Lajong could fire Desmond Bulpin and it happened only a couple of days later with the Northeastern club fighting for survival in the league.

Shillong Lajong FC name squad for I-League

Northeastern I-League club Shillong Lajong FC have named their preliminary 26 players squad for the marathon league which is set to run until end-April 2013. The squad under new Scottish coach Desmond Bulpin looks stronger then last season as the club has been able to bring in quality players.

Desmond Bulpin named as new Shillong Lajong FC coach

Scotsman Desmond Donaldson Bulpin will be back in India in the upcoming 2012/13 season as the head coach of I-League side Shillong Lajong FC. The Northeastern club at a press conference at the Shillong Press Club today announced that Bulpin would be joining them on a two year contract.

Shillong Lajong General Secretary Larsing Ming Sawyan said, "We are happy to have Desmond Bulpin join Lajong and we are hopeful that the experience that he brings with him will be highly beneficial to the I League team as well as our Youth development programme. Our objective over the next two years is to nurture talent across the North Eastern Region and with Desmond on board, I believe our plans have received a major fillip."

The 61 year old Bulpin had been coach of the Indian Arrows a couple of seasons back, the AIFF's Developmental side which is now called Pailan Arrows besides also coaching the India Under-23s in the 2012 London Olympic qualifiers.

As Arrows coach Bulpin is credited for the rise of young talent like Jeje Lalpekhlua, Lalrindika Ralte, Raju Gaikwad and other players, but after a season he had to go which many see as having been a big mistake by the AIFF.

Bulpin is an experienced coach who back in England has worked for football clubs such as Tottenham Hotspurs, Queens Park Rangers, Bristol City, Bristol Rovers, Stockport County, Plymouth Argyle and Leicester City. Thereafter he worked internationally in Singapore, Uzbekistan and the Philippines before coming to India.

Desmond Bulpin said, "It is a privilege to join Shillong Lajong Football Club with one of the largest support base in Indian football club plus a Chairman and a Board of Directors who are building a Football Club through their academy. I look forward to working with the Supporters, Directors, Players and all the members Shillong Lajong to take the club forward to become one of the best clubs in India."

Meanwhile the coach of the last two seasons Pradhyum Reddy will remain at the club and look after the youth development program.

At the press meet the club also announced the contract extensions of Wailadmi Passah, John D. Menyongar, Eugeneson Lyngdoh, Potsangbam Renedy Singh and Sushil Kumar Singh; while the club has newly signed goalkeeper Sanasam Basant Singh (United Sikkim FC), defenders Govin Moirangthem Singh (United Sikkim FC) and Rollingson Hungyo (Pune FC), midfielders Chitrasen Chandam Singh (Churchill Brothers SC) and Jibon Singh (Pailan Arrows), besides handing a short-term contract to North Korean under-23 international Mil-Chol Son.

With such signings and more to come Lajong aim to be in the top half of the I-League after finishing 10th last season, their best-ever finish.

Pre-Olympic Qualifier: India squad against Qatar

The Indian national Under-23 team coach Desmond Bulpin has cut down from his 25 probables to the final 18 boys who will travel to Qatar to face them in the first leg away tie in the 2012 London Olympics - Asian Round 2 qualifiers. Raju Eknath Gaekwad has been named as the Under-23 captain for these matches.

The India Under-23 have been given a tough draw as our side will have to face Gulf nation Qatar home-and-away on June 19 and June 23 to make it into the group stage. In the first round India had beaten neighbours Myanmar 3-2 on aggregate in a home-and-away tie.

Left out from the final squad were Jagroop Singh, Ravi Kumar, R. Vishal Kumar, Lalrozama Fenai, Inderpreet Singh, Ongnam Milan Singh, Jagtar Singh; all boys from the Indian Arrows. It seems coach Bulpin has gone in for some experience ahead of the matches against Qatar.

India U-23 prepare for Olympic qualifiers against Qatar

The Indian national Under-23 team camp for the second Round Asian qualifiers against Qatar for the 2012 London Olympics kicked-off on Friday in Pune, but due to the rains they had to train indoors on day one.

Yesterday the 25 probables got a chance to test the grass in a short camp under the watchful eyes of coach Desmond Bulpin and the Englishman has one major advantage that the core of his team are from his Indian Arrows side who played the I-League this year. So the often needed time to gel and get to know each other will be much shorter as players who had performed well in the I-League were added to the probables.

Reflecting on the importance of the camp, coach Desmond Bulpin highlighted, "It is important to prepare in the right manner for such a crucial match."

The India Under-23 have been given a tough draw as our side will have to face Gulf nation Qatar home-and-away on June 19 and June 23 to make it into the third Round Asian group stage. In the first round India had beaten neighbours Myanmar 3-2 on aggregate in a home-and-away tie.

But it isn't impossible for the Under-23 boys to move on and for that to happen they need to get a positive result in Doha on June 19 to make an upset possible four days later in Pune.

What Bob Houghton has done for our football

I have been surprised at the amount of criticism our now former coach Bob Houghton has received from the media and fans. Because I think one thing is for sure, Bob has done a lot of things which were and are important for the development of Indian football, but some facts are often forgotten or maybe not even known, while others just seem to criticise for the sake of doing so.

The nearly five year reign of Bob Houghton as coach of the Indian national team ended on Saturday, so lets focus on what Bob has done or tried to do for Indian football outside of Team India.

But lets first look at how it all started. In June 2006 while the whole planet was looking at Germany during the 2006 FIFA World Cup India appointed a new coach in Bob Houghton, who came with a pedigree of over 30 years of coaching experience from around the world. At the time Bob came to India, England under Sven Goran Eriksson took on his native Sweden at the FIFA World Cup in Cologne. Eriksson is one of the numerous Swedish coaches who where heavily influenced by Bob Houghton and Roy Hodgson, who coached in Scandinavia in the 1970s and we actually had a nice conversations about Bob's appointment and Sven had said it was a wise decision by the federation in India.

From those days it is known that Bob Houghton prefers to play a classic 4-4-2, which some would call old fashioned in modern day football though it is result oriented football and in the end results count the most plus it's also known in football circles that Bob mainly relies on a set group of players, he isn't a manager who makes too many changes to his squads. You go with it or leave it.

And when Bob arrived Team India was in a mess. Some players had resigned others like Baichung Bhutia where thinking about resigning and ending their international career, so Bob first had to convince key players to return or stay with Team India.

Some say Bob hasn't developed any talent. Then I simply ask them who where Subrata Pal, Gouramangi Singh or Sunil Chhetri when Bob came to India? None of these boys were anywhere near being key players in the national team. And the next crop of players would have been developed now after the Asian Cup, if given chance as the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers showed.

Bob also ensured extended foreign camps, the best available facilities and that the interest of the players were taken care off, so nobody would have to worry about anything. Things which weren't done in the past and therefore it isn't surprising that Bob was popular amongst his players, though he kept a distance but was there whenever needed and he treated the players like his own sons.

Bob also has been working on getting a youth development system in place. He got Colin Toal as technical director and Desmond Bulpin as coach of the Indian Arrows & Under-23 national side. Along with them he first created and then streamlined Indian football's youth development system. Against opposition from the federation who often said what's the use of spending money on such projects they got long duration camps, foreign exposure trips and better accommodation in place besides fighting for the Arrows to be integrated into the I-League.

The results of youth development work doesn't come overnight it will take time, but to end on an example most of the players in the Indian Arrows are a product of this development work of the last four years and maybe in another four/five years we can judge that work if it is allowed to continue.

You might not like it, but I believe that Bob deserves credit for all the work and whoever comes next has a tough job on hand.
