AFC Cup: East Bengal held by Selangor, but go through to knockout stage

Kolkata giants East Bengal Club were held to a late two-all draw by Selangor FA in their fifth AFC Cup Group H match at the Shah Alam Stadium in Selangor. The red-and-gold dropped two points, but the one point gained was enough to seal their passage to the AFC Cup pre-quarterfinals as they stay top of their group on 11 points.

The hosts made a lively start amid wet conditions and they could have taken the lead when Michal Kubala fired in a low shot from 25 metres that forced goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu into a diving save. But it was the visitors who took the lead in the 23rd minute after Chidi Edeh attempted to burst through the middle of the Selangor defence but his progress was halted and the ball ricocheted off a Selangor defender to Orji, who took the ball into space on the left of the box before firing it between the legs of keeper Sharbinee Allawee Ramli. Selangor went close to levelling the score in the 35th minute when Raimi Mohammed Nor fired a shot across the face of the East Bengal goal that was just too far in front of a lurking Ramzul Adenan and the home side suffered a blow when Kubala had to be taken off injured just before half-time.

Things got worse early in the second half when Lalrindika Ralte fired home at the third attempt in the 54th minute after Chidi's shot had been saved by Sharbinee and Orji had his effort cleared by a defender. East Bengal looked to head for an easy victory before substitute striker Manandeep Singh saw red for a late sliding tackle on Kunanlan just minutes after he had come on.

Selangor had offered little in attack until then but they came out of their shell as in the 79th minute Shukor Jusoh fired a fierce rising shot from 25 metres that found the top corner of the net despite Gurpreet getting a touch to the ball. Now the home team moved forward in search of an equaliser in the closing stages and Kunanlan forced a good save out of Gurpreet before the Red Giants got the equaliser deep into injury-time. With almost all of the East Bengal players dropping back into their box to defend an Amri Yahyah free-kick, the ball was played instead to an unmarked Aizuddin, whose low drive from 30 metres went through a crowd of players and flashed past Gurpreet to secure a point for the home side.

With the win East Bengal moved into a continental knockout stage for the first time since 2004 and if they avoid a defeat against Vietnam's Sai Gon Xuan Thanh next week at home, then they will finish top of Group H.

AFC Cup: East Bengal want to seal knockout spot in Malaysia

Kolkata giants East Bengal Club head to Malaysia today for their fifth AFC Cup Group H match to face Selangor FA on Tuesday, April 23. The match would be played at the Shah Alam Stadium in Selangor with kick-off at 8.45pm Malaysia local, which is 6.15pm in India.

East Bengal are top of their group with 10 points and a draw would be enough to ensure their passage to the pre-quarterfinals, but the red-and-gold are travelling to Selangor to win the match. The first-leg had been won by East Bengal through a Lalrindika Ralte long-range effort.

In another first East Bengal in their last match against Tampines Rovers became the first Indian side to score 100 goals in Asian club competitions and are two short of scoring 50 goals in the AFC Cup.

So enough things for the red-and-gold and their fans to look forward to...

I-League: East Bengal has to win to keep title chances alive

Kolkata giants East Bengal Club face Sporting Clube de Goa later today at the Saltlake Stadium in the I-League and will hope to return to winning ways after three draws in a row, but the Flaming Orange are unbeaten against the red-and-gold this season having drawn their two earlier encounters.

East Bengal currently are second in the table with 42 points from 22 matches, while Sporting Clube de Goa are eighth with 30 points from 23 matches.

"Winning all our matches remains the only option for us. Churchill Brothers are ahead of us on points but all is not lost and still a lot of things can change. So will approach our own target first and will look at other results," East Bengal coach Trevor Morgan said about his teams situation.

East Bengal will be without midfielders Mehtab Hossain and Harmanjot Khabra due to booking problems while defenders Naoba Singh and Saumik Dey, and striker Andrew Barisic are nursing injuries. "We will take a call on the final XI on the morning of the match. Our opponents are strong and we will have to give our best to make a match out of it. My players are professionals and they understand their job well," Trevor Morgan added.

Meanwhile Sporting Clube de Goa will be missing defender Joyner Lourenco and striker Dawson Fernandes through suspension, who are set to be replaced by Joseph Clemente and speedy forward Victorino Fernandes. "We know East Bengal are a good side and they will be even dangerous on home turf. I have told my boys to be more cautious in their approach," Sporting Clube de Goa coach Óscar Bruzón Barreras said.

East Bengal's Trevor Morgan: I focus more on overall development!

East Bengal Club coach Trevor James Morgan stays the flavour of the season. From winning the Federation Cup to tasting success in the ongoing AFC Cup, East Bengal have been the side to beat. In a freewheeling interview with AIFF Media, Morgan reflects on his time with East Bengal, the AFC Cup, the expectations, chances of winning the I-League and much more.

You already have one foot in the Round of 16 of the AFC Cup, a feat which East Bengal last achieved in 2004. What are your expectations?

It will certainly be a great achievement to qualify from the Group Stage of the AFC Cup. But we haven't sealed it as yet – we need one more point for that. I feel proud the manner my boys played – both at home and away. To overcome such a hectic schedule is not a joke. At the start of the season our target was to get through to the next round and I am glad we have almost achieved it.

The next round will be a tough one but the way my team has played so far, I strongly feel we can progress further. But I reiterate, we haven't qualified for the next stage as yet.

You stay five points behind leaders Churchill Brothers in the I-League. Do you still believe you can win it?

We have to believe we can still clinch it - otherwise what's the point? Having said that, you need to remember that Churchill (Brothers) are in great form and there is no reason to think that they will drop points. But stranger things have happened in football. We have to make sure we win the four matches and hope Churchill drop points. Without hope and belief, the purpose of playing stays defeated.

You have every feather on your cap except the I-league. Is it frustrating to be so close to the League and not having won it ever?

I don't lose sleep over not winning the I-League. We play in so many competitions throughout the season and there are bound to be spells where a team loses. I am more focused on the overall development of the club, and I as I see it we have improved leaps and bounds over the last three years.

We have won the Federation Cup twice and even the Calcutta Football League (CFL) and the IFA Shield. We have finished runners-up twice in the I-League. I think we are on the right track and the credit goes to the boys.

Describe your three years with East Bengal. What has been the secret behind the success?

We have got good players and a settled system. When a new recruit joins the club, he quickly learns the ropes and that is fantastic. My boys work really hard and give their best. There is no secret as such. Hard work has paid dividends.

Can you educate us about your rotation policy of players.

When you are playing an I-League game on Saturday and then turning up for a CFL match next week on Tuesday, you have to shuffle your squad to avoid fatigue. I am blessed with an excellent squad and in my three years with the club, this year we have the strongest set. Our bench strength is very good and that allows me to do what I do.

What stays your finest hour with the Red and Gold?

(Laughs). There have been quite a few. But to pin-point one, it has to be winning the first Federation Cup, within three months of my arrival. I was a relatively unknown face in Indian football and that triumph made people trust in me as a Coach. Most importantly, it gave my players the confidence and belief. That confidence started evolving and we believed we could beat any team. That win made it possible.

Are you satisfied with the manner the club has shaped up under you in the last three years.

Personally, I take great satisfaction from the fact that the club has achieved considerable success over the past three years. I would not be able to compare it with the past as I have little knowledge. But yes, the boys have been exceptional and to see them and the club grow in front of my eyes was heartening.

Yes we have not won the I-League which is the most coveted crown but the fact that we have stood up to our reputation every inch was magnificent. In the League too we have been very consistent. In Cup Competitions we have been superb. I am a happy man.

AFC Cup: East Bengal win 2-1 against Tampines Rovers, close in on Round of 16

Kolkata giants East Bengal Club scored another victory against Tampines Rover, this time a 2-1 win in their fourth AFC Cup Group H match at the Saltlake Stadium in Kolkata this afternoon. With this win the red-and-gold moved to 10 points from four matches.

Chidi Edeh came on early for an injured Andrew Barisic, who opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with his second goal of the campaign only for Mohamad Shaiful Esah to pull Tampines level on 68 minutes, but winger Lalrindika Ralte scored the winger with four minutes to go for a deserving win.

"We are now favourably placed for qualification and hopefully we can achieve that in our next match," said East Bengal coach Trevor Morgan. "The heat had a bearing on the pace of the match which was much slower than the pace in Singapore."

With Tampines unable to advance to the knockout stage after suffering a third defeat in Group H, East Bengal will secure a place in the Round of 16 in the next round as Malaysia's Selangor beat Vietnam's Sai Gon Xuan Thanh later on Tuesday, which puts East Bengal top of the group.

"The deserving team won and I would like to wish him all the best for the next round," said Tampines coach Nenad Bacina. "As we do not have any chance of qualification, we will concentrate on the S.League from now on."

AFC Cup: East Bengal look to seal Pre-Quarterfinal spot tomorrow

Kolkata giants East Bengal Club are set to host Singapore side Tampines Rovers in their fourth AFC Cup Group H match tomorrow. The match would be played at the Saltlake Stadium in Kolkata with kick-off at 3.15pm IST.

After the red-and-golds 4-2 away win at the Jelan Besar Stadium in Singapore against the same opponent, they will look to add three more points to qualify for the knockout stages with the team looking to seal their place in the Round of 16.

East Bengal coach Trevor Morgan said at the pre-match press conference, "We are in a good position in the Group and hope to qualify to Pre-Quarter Final. If we win it will be a massive step towards qualification."

And about the weather Trevor added, "The soaring temperatures and dry heat would have a bearing on both the teams even more on Tampines. The game would not be as fast as it was in Singapore."

Meanwhile Tampines Rovers Croatian coach Nenad Becina said about the turf and the weather, "We are not at a disadvantage with the astro turf as we are used to such surfaces back home. Hot weather would be a factor but it will affect both teams as the kick off is scheduled at 3.15 pm."

"Our midfield would be bolstered with the return of captain Mustafic Fahruddin. We don't have any special plans for thwarting the East Bengal strikers and midfielders and hope that lady luck which deserted us in Singapore will be back with us," Nenad Becina added.

Meanwhile Goalkeeper Sasa Dreven and winger Imran Sahib have been treated for knocks in training but both are expected to be ready for the game tomorrow.

VIDEO: Tampines Rovers vs East Bengal Post-Match reactions

Here the Singapore S-League video of the Post-Match reactions from today's Tampines Rovers vs East Bengal Club match in the AFC Cup Group H with statements from the two coaches.

AFC Cup: East Bengal score impressive 4-2 victory in Singapore

Kolkata giants East Bengal Club scored an impressive 4-2 victory against Tampines Rover in their third AFC Cup Group H match at the Jelan Besar Stadium in Singapore tonight.

With this away win East Bengal move to the top of Group H with now seven points from three matches and a one goal better goal difference then Sai Gon Xuan Thanh from Vietnam with Selangor from Malaysia and Tampines Rovers only on a point and an uphill task to move past the top two sides in the group and qualify for the pre-quarterfinals.

Tampines Rovers were chasing all three points to stay in contention for the knockout stage and they had the first chance after only four minutes when midfielder Shahdan Sulaiman skewed a shot wide from inside the penalty area. Then Khairul Amri saw his header saved by East Bengal goalkeeper Abhijit Mondal's foot after just 12 minutes, before a defender blocked another shot by the Singapore international striker shortly afterwards.

However, it was East Bengal who took the lead on 18 minutes when Tampines defender Anaz Hadee tried to clear the ball from a corner only to send it into his own net amid confusion inside the Tampines box. The Indian Federation Cup holders could have gone 2-0 up two minutes later but goalkeeper Sasa Dreven tipped Mehtab Hossain's 50-metre lob over the bar. But then Tampines levelled on 28 minutes when Serbian forward Sead Hadzibulic rose highest to head home off a diagonal lob from Shahdan, and the hosts looked set to press for more with their superior team play.

However, wasteful finishing by the reigning S.League champions kept the red-and-gold in the game, and striker Chidi Edeh played a central role as East Bengal scored two quick goals shortly after the hour mark. First Chidi showed alertness to chase down a ball on the right before he squared for Andrew Barisic to finish easily from two metres out on 62 minutes and then Chidi finished off a counter-attack led by compatriot Penn Orji two minutes later.

But the game was far from over then Amri pulled a goal back for Tampines within just 60 seconds of Chidi's goal to keep the score close, and Tampines brought on Jamil Ali and Aleksandar Duric in a bid to salvage a point. But East Bengal restored their two-goal cushion with three minutes to go, as Chidi played another ball on the right for Andrew Barisic to bundle home.

East Bengal coach Trevor Morgan declared himself pleasantly surprised with the win, which put his team in a strong position to qualify, but stated he is not aiming to top the group. "We would have been happy with a point, but this was a very, very open game," said the Englishman.

"We've got a good start (in the competition), we've had seven points now and we've only played one home game. We'll be favourites to win our two remaining home games, with them being played in the hot afternoon in Calcutta."

"But I've never set goals for this team; it's impossible to set goals when we play in five or six competitions in a season. We'll just take things one game at a time."

Despite the defeat putting his team on the brink of AFC Cup elimination, Tampines Rovers head coach Nenad Bacina stressed the importance of staying upbeat for the return fixture in six days' time.

"I think we didn't deserve to lose by this scoreline, but congratulations to East Bengal, they took their chances. They were the better side tonight," said the Croatian.

"The players tried their best tonight, so there should be no regrets. The world will not stop because we lost a game, so we have to stay positive," Bacinas added.

In the end East Bengal won 4-2 against Tampines Rover and followed-up yesterday's Churchill Brothers 3-0 win against Warriors FC also from Singapore

VIDEO: Prayag United 2-2 East Bengal - Goals!

East Bengal Club were held to a two-all draw by Prayag United SC earlier today in Kalyani. Here the video of all the four goals scored on the day!

East Bengal squander two goal lead, only draw against Prayag United

Kolkata giants East Bengal Club dropped two vital points in their quest to bring the title back to the City of Joy as their city rivals Prayag United SC came back from two goals down to draw two-all at the Kalyani Municipal Stadium.

East Bengal stay second with 42 points from 22 matches, two behind league leaders Churchill Brothers SC; while Prayag United SC are back in fourth with 35 points from 22 matches.

The first session was a tactical affair with some rough tackles here and there. It was Chidi Edeh who gave the red-and-gold a 41st minute lead when he got a long ball forward on the right, beat Bello Rasaq and his firce shot could not be kept out by keeper Sangram Mukherjee as the ball hit both posts before going in.

After the break things got even better for East Bengal as in the 49th minute they earned a penalty as Sangram Mukherjee hacked down an onrushing Ishfaq Ahmed making a clumsy effort at clearing the ball. Striker Manandeep Singh placed the ball nicely to the other side of the keeper to give East Bengal a comfortable 2-0 lead.

But their goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu spilled a straight forward collection of a Carlos Hernandez shot and let the ball slip home when he tried to block the powerful longranger in the 63rd minute. Suddenly Prayag United were in the game and they found the equaliser only three minutes later. Carlos sent a perfect through, that caught the East Bengal defence napping and released Ranty Martins Soleye free inside the box. The Nigerian made the most of the opportunity and fired the ball past a stranded Gurpreet.

East Bengal tried to regain the lead but failed in their bid as Sangram saved a 70th minute effort from Chidi while an open Ishfaq chip went wide of an open goal in the 82nd minute. And then in the last attack of the game Chidi scored, but the referee wrongly called an offside which would have been East Bengal's winner and ensured the crucial three points.

I-League: East Bengal needs three points against Prayag United

Tomorrow afternoon when Prayag United SC host East Bengal Club in a Round 22 match of the I-League at the Kalyani Municipal Stadium it comes just nine days after the Men in Purple won 1-0 against the red-and-gold in the final of the 117th IFA Shield.

But that was the IFA Shield, now it is back to the I-League where East Bengal Club are three points behind league leaders Churchill Brothers but have played the same number of matches. A win tomorrow will be vital to keep the pressure on the Goans ahead of the final rounds of the I-League.

"The two matches are different for they were played in different tournaments so the two cannot be compared. But tomorrow's match is crucial as it is important for us to win and remain in the run for the title," East Bengal coach Trevor James Morgan said.

Meanwhile Prayag United coach Eelco Schattorie said, "Just because we beat them in the (IFA) Shield final does not mean we have all the advantage. We played better on that day and won. We have to repeat the good showing once again to repeat the success."

And Prayag United have been a tough opponent for the red-and-gold, who in recent I-League matches have found their form and have moved into fourth position just ahead of Pune FC on goal difference and behind champions Dempo SC.

"Prayag United are a strong side with good players like Carlos Hernandez and Ranty Martins. We have plans in place for our opponents and hope they will come good this time," Morgan added.

The game will also be a match-up between two of the best I-League strikers with Prayag's Ranty Martins Soleye taking on East Bengal's Chidi Edeh.

"They have good players and we do not have specific plan to mark anyone in particular. We will play to our plan and try to make the most of it," Eelco added.

A good Kolkata derby is on the cards with a lot at stake.
