Ex-Players: I-League teams should send scouts for Santosh Trophy!
Not long back, there was a time when breaking into the West Bengal Santosh Trophy team was more difficult than finding a place in the Indian National Team! Ask Tanumoy Basu, the former Indian international goalkeeper, presently the goalkeeping coach of the Pailan Arrows, who has been part of 14 Santosh Trophies for Railways and West Bengal."There are so many such instances when players who represented India couldn't get a place in Bengal's Starting XI," Basu recollects. "A place in the Bengal side was seen as an achievement. We used to play for our respective clubs throughout the season only to get selected for the Santosh Trophy," he adds.
"All of us, used to look forward to the Nationals as that was the opportunity to prove our mettle against the best in the business," Basu quips.
Plying his trade with Railways and West Bengal, Basu tasted success with his native state winning three titles for West Bengal, also Captaining the most accomplished outfit to glory in the 1994/95 edition.
"I'm proud to say that I was the captain of the side which won 31 trophies in total, in the year 1994. I remember Baichung (Bhutia) scoring the winner, then the golden goal, in extra time. We won 2-1 against Punjab. It was euphoric. I cannot put it in words," Basu recollected.
He hadn’t finished yet. Continuing in the same verve, Basu narrated, "In Kerala they used to have temporary bamboo stands for the Tournament. I remember the galleries getting full by morning itself. People used to flock like anything. Tickets used to get sold in no time for big matches, Bengal playing Kerala, for example."
"Icons like I.M. Vijayan, Baichung, Joe Paul Anchery; coaches of the calibre of Pradip-da (P.K. Banerjee), Nayeen-da (Syed Nayeemuddin) were all part of the Santosh Trophy," he concluded.
"I feel scouts should pay a little more attention to the Santosh Trophy. A lot of budding talent goes unnoticed. Club representatives should go and watch these boys play. Indian is a vast country, and states which don't have an I-League team have only the Santosh Trophy to put to the fore their skills."
Former India Captain and talismanic striker Shabbir Ali picked up from when Basu left. "To me, the State Team stays of paramount importance. States who don't have any representation in the I League, get a chance to show what they can offer. If you have I-League coaches or even assistant coaches to watch the Santosh Trophy matches, it will do Indian football a world do good," asserted Ali who played for both Bengal and Maharashtra in the coveted meet.
Ali thanked the AIFF for the timing of the Santosh Trophy. "The fact that Santosh Trophy is starting in February-March is a good thing. Teams like Services and Railways who practice till January stay fresh during this time. Also the weather is conducive for quality football. AIFF should be credited for this move."
"My triumph with West Bengal back in 1979 will remain in my memory forever. We beat Goa by a solitary goal in the final. There were all stars playing for the Bengal Team. It was unbelievable!"

I-League: It's Derby time in Kolkata tomorrow
It's once more derby time in Kolkata, then Mohun Bagan AC host East Bengal Club in a Round 20 match of the I-League at the Saltlake Stadium at 2pm tomorrow. After all the controversy surrounding the walk out of Mohun Bagan at the last Kolkata derby on December 9, 2012; this derby is about avoiding trouble and any untoward incidence which would further bring the Kolkata derby and Indian football in disrepute.
Under instructions from West Bengal Minister of Sports Madan Mitra, the hosts Mohun Bagan along with their archrivals East Bengal and the federations have taken as much precautionary measures as possible like having a private security agency along with the police force to control and manage the crowds, three level of security checks at entry points and fans not allowed to bring in a number of things.
Coming to the football, it is a crucial match for both sides then it is an unusual situation as East Bengal are on top of the I-League, while Mohun Bagan are bottom and fighting relegation. But as they would say around the world, a derby is a derby and not a usual match so such standards should then not be applied.
"I am not under pressure but tomorrow's match is more important than the others. A win there will motivate the players more than any other victory in the tournament. It gives them inspiration do well in the upcoming matches," said East Bengal coach Trevor Morgan.
And Morgan added, "It is true that we were given three points and as many goals for playing 45 minutes before the last derby was abandoned. I won't mind if it is one goal and three points this time."
Meanwhile Mohun Bagan counterpart Karim Bencharifa said, "This match is very important for us as we have to win to bring the team out of the relegation zone."
"We have Tolgay in the side this time and his inclusion will definitely enhance the confidence of the side. We won the match in the last round and hope to see the team continuing to improve as they have done in the last match (3-1 against ONGC). East Bengal is a good side and we are fighting relegation but these considerations do not count here. What matters most is how the team performs on that particular day," Karim added.

VIDEO: Strict security arrangements for Kolkata derby finalised

Should the next Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal Derby have been played outside Kolkata?
Those of you who follow Indian football regularly will have read or even seen footage of what happened at the last Kolkata derby in the I-League on December 9, 2012 between East Bengal Club and Mohun Bagan AC at the Saltlake Stadium. Now in a weeks time on Saturday, February 9 the next derby in the I-League will be held once more at 2pm in the afternoon with one question not asked at all - shouldn't this match have been moved outside of Kolkata?
With floodlights still not ready an afternoon kick-off was unavoidable but the pelting of the play of field with anything available should have had some sort of reaction and not just costlier tickets and higher security, which this time's host Mohun Bagan is ensuring, but in my opinion the game should have been taken out of Kolkata to make it clear for once and for all that such behaviour will not be accepted nor tolerated.
And as it is the biggest match of the year within the Indian football calendar even holding it e.g. the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi would have drawn large crowds and maybe Delhi could have shown Kolkata how to watch and enjoy a football match then that is getting lost in the Kolkata derby.
It is about abuse and obscene gestures, hurting not only sentiments but if possible also causing physical harm. Things have simply gone to far and the authorities need to act to keep such behaviour in check.
Just some food for thought from my side...

Pailan Group to sponsor Bengal Youth Development program
The Pailan Group, the partners and sponsors of the AIFF's Developmental side, the renamed Pailan Arrows will now also support the development of Bengal youth football. At a press conference at the Bengal Club in Kolkata yesterday it was announced that the Pailan Group would sponsor the Indian Football Association (West Bengal) youth development program. The IFA is happy to be able to sign a sponsorship deal worth Rs 1 crore per years with the Pailan Group for its youth development program which will include the IFA Residential Academy (under-15 & U-19), the IFA district camps, the school football tournament - the Bankim Cup and the Under-19 Bengal state team.

Manchester United & Juventus deny Kolkata game on August 1
There was news over the last few days that English Premier League giants Manchester United could take on Italian Serie A champions Juventus Torino in a friendly match at the Saltlake Stadium in Kolkata on August 1. In informal communication with both clubs my contacts have denied any such match taking place though showing interest to play in India in the future if their match fees and other amenities are taken care off.
Manchester United have confirmed now officially to journalist colleagues in the UK at Press Association Sport that there would be no match this summer in India as the club is still to announce their final plans for the summer friendlies which is likely to include China and South Africa besides a match in Norway against Valerenga Oslo on August 5.
This comes just a couple of days after West Bengal Sports Minister Madan Mitra announced that talks were ongoing with Manchester United and Juventus to sort out everything before the match was finally announced though no clearance was sought from the AIFF.
Speculation surrounding such a match comes just weeks after a match between FC Barcelona and Inter Milan was supposed to be played in Kolkata on May 19, the day of the UEFA Champions League final, with the match called-off weeks after it was supposed to take place.
This once more leaves Indian football or organisation of international matches in India in bad light...
