2nd Division I-League: Complete Preliminary Round Results!

The three 2nd Division I-League preliminary round groups comprising of 26 teams was played from March 9 to 27, 2013 across the country with the top two clubs from each group reaching the final round, while from there two teams will gain promotion to the next edition of the I-League.

The 2nd Division I-League's Final round will be played as a double header in Bangalore and Kerala and it will see Langsning FC, Rangdajied United FC, Mohammedan Sporting Club, Bhowanipore Club, Southern Samity and Mumbai Tigers FC in action.

Mumbai's Kenkre FC name squad for 2nd Division I-League

Kenkre FC from Mumbai have announced their list of 28 players including three foreigners for the 2nd Division I-League.

Kenkre FC have brought in Portuguese coach Jose Luis Lopes Da Costa E. Silva, who has since signed three Portuguese players in Rodilson Felisberto Fernandes Dias, Domingo De Jesus Gomes Lopes and Bruno Daniel Alciaes, while also signing Australian Daniel Atkins.

Kenkre FC have been drawn in Group A, to be played in Bhopal, alongside Delhi United Soccer Club, DSK Shivajians FC (Pune), George Telegraph SC (Kolkata), KGF Academy (Bangalore), Kohima Komets (Nagaland), Langsning FC (Shillong), Rangdajied United FC (Shillong) and Samaleshwari Sporting Club (Orissa).

MDFA scraps Mumbai Elite Division due to lack of teams

After months of not knowing if the Mumbai Elite Division would be played or not, the Mumbai District Football Association has decided to scrap the 2012/13 edition of the city league due to lack of teams able to participate as 10 of the 14 teams have other commitments at the time of the league.

Only last week the MDFA had announced that the league would be played from February 25 to March 16 with only seven teams as due to fixture problems there would be no participation from clubs playing in the I-League (ONGC, Air India, Mumbai FC) and 2nd Division I-League (Dodsal FC, Kenkre FC, PIFA) besides the Indian Navy.

This meant the Elite Division would have been played with Western Railway, Central Railway, Mumbai Customs, Union Bank of India, Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers besides promoted outfits Maharashtra State Police and Companeroes SC taking part.

But then the Railway sides - Western Railway and Central Railway - pulled out due to their Inter-Railway Tournament commitments while Mumbai Customs also have an Inter-Customs tournament to play.

As per the MDFA an earlier date was not possible due to the renovation work at the Cooperage ground and non-availability of alternative venues. This left the Mumbai District Football Association with only four teams to play and therefore the MDFA decided to scrap the top tier division of Mumbai football, a sad first for football in Mumbai.

Mumbai Elite Division: No I-League or Division 2 clubs to participate

After months of not knowing if the Mumbai Elite Division for the 2012/13 season would be played or not, the Mumbai District Football Association has announced that the league would be played from February 25 to March 16, but due to fixture problems there would be no participation from clubs playing in the I-League and 2nd Division I-League besides the Indian Navy.

This means that defending champions ONGC besides former champions Air India and Mumbai FC plus 2nd Division sides Kenkre FC, PIFA and newly formed Dodsal FC would not be part of the league due to their national commitments, while Indian Navy have also opted out as they have to play in the Inter-Services tournament.

This means the Mumbai District Football Association organised Mumbai Elite Division would kick-off at the Western Railway ground, Mahalaxmi, from Monday, February 25 with only seven teams participating.

The teams, who will vie for the top honours this year, are Western Railway, Central Railway, Mumbai Customs, Union Bank of India, Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers besides promoted outfits Maharashtra State Police and Companeroes SC.

The MDFA has also decided to complete league just within a month and the fixtures have been drawn up with the concluding league matches scheduled to be played on Friday, March 16.

The opening match would be between Central Railway and Union Bank of India at 1.30pm on February 25, followed by the second match between Western Railway and Mumbai Customs that day itself.

2nd Division I-League: Groupings done for 26 teams

The All India Football Federation has named the three 2nd Division I-League preliminary round groups comprising of 26 teams which will be played from March 9 to April 5, 2013 across the country with the top two clubs from each group reaching the final round, while from there two teams will gain promotion to the next edition of the I-League.

In Group A, which will be played in Bhopal, the following teams will face each other in Delhi United Soccer Club, DSK Shivajains FC (Pune), George Telegraph SC (Kolkata), Kenkre FC (Mumbai), KGF Academy (Bangalore), Kohima Komets (Nagaland), Langsning FC (Shillong), Rangdajied United FC (Shillong) and Samaleshwari Sporting Club (Orissa).

In Group B the teams Aizwal FC (Mizoram), Aryan Club (Kolkata), Bhowanipore Club (Kolkata), Green Valley SC (Guwahati), Josco FC (Kerala), Mohammedan Sporting Club (Kolkata), PIFA (Mumbai), Royal Wahingdoh FC (Shillong) and Simla Youngs FC (Delhi) will be facing each other.

In Group C with would be Dodsal FC (Mumbai), Eagles FC (Kerala), Hindustan FC (Delhi), Kalighat Milan Sangha (Kolkata), Luangmual FC (Mizoram), South United FC (Bangalore), Southern Samity (Kolkata) and Vasco SC (Goa).

Mumbai's Kenkre FC to organise trials in Kolkata on February 1/2

Mumbai's Kenkre FC who will be once more participating in the 2nd Division I-League this season will be holding open selection trials in Kolkata on Friday/Saturday, February 1/2 to find suitable players for their squad.

The open selection trials for Kenkre FC's first team will be conducted on February 1/2 in Kolkata at the SAI grounds of the Saltlake Stadium sports complex. The trials will be held from 09.00 to 12.00 IST with interested players asked to report with their full playing kit.

The Mumbai-based club, whose Academy is well known, are hoping to find experienced players to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2nd Division I-League campaign.

21 clubs to participate in 2nd Division I-League

The All India Football Federation has finalised the 21 clubs to participate in the 2nd Division I-League 2012/13, which is set to kick-off in March. The top two clubs will gain promotion to the next edition of the I-League.

The clubs have been selected on basis of the AIFF's professional club licensing process which started on November 21, 2012 when State Associations were asked to nominate clubs interested in participating in the 2nd Division I-League 2012/13.

AIFF received 47 nominations for the same following which the clubs were informed to submit the documents by December 22, 2012.

The final deadline for the clubs to submit the documents were extended to January 22, 2013 by the AIFF Executive Committee which met on January 15, 2013. Eventually twenty one clubs fulfilled the criteria and have been invited to play with the 2nd Division to be played in Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Mumbai's Nadkarni Cup to be played next month

The 106th edition of the 'RCF' Nadkarni Cup Football Tournament 2012/13 will be held from October 3 onwards at the RCF Ground in Chembur, Mumbai. 12 of Mumbai's top clubs including I-League side ONGC, newly founded Dodsal FC and I-League Division 2 sides Kenkre FC and PIFA-Colaba FC will be seen in action.

The tournament is a season opener for the top tier clubs of the Mumbai Football League organised by the Mumbai District Football Association. Defending champions are Mumbai FC who last year had beaten PIFA-Colaba FC 4-0 in the final.

So far the pre-quarterfinal and quarterfinal matches have been finalised with the dates of the semifinals and final to be fixed later.

3rd Go Green Cup 2012 - Football with an Ecological touch

The third edition of the Kenkre Go Green Cup 2012 turned out to be a roaring success at the Dadar Parsi Colony Gymkhana Grounds in Dadar (East) Mumbai. The tournament was held between February 19-22.

Boisterous excitement and innocent melodrama was on show as over 3,000 children aged between 8 to 16 years took part in the tournament. The Cup witnessed participation of teams from schools and clubs from across Mumbai city. In fact, for the first time an NGO - Oscar Foundation - had a podium finish, bagging the Runners-Up trophy in the Under-12 category.

Spurred on by friends and family, the thrill hit a peak as winning teams got to shake hands with chief guest Haroon Fakruddin Amiri, captain of the Afghanistan national football team, and guest of honour Abhishek Yadav, an ex-India international. Both players currently play for I-League side Mumbai FC.

Each winning team was presented with Rs 20,000 while each runner-up team took away Rs 12,000 as prize money. The cash prize was Rs 7,000 for third placed teams and
Rs 5,000 for the fourth placed teams.

The Go Green Cup is a community-based football tournament for children, initiated by the Kenkre Sports Foundation. Having entered its third year in 2012, the tournament is fast becoming a key date on the calendar for a legion of growing children in love with football in Mumbai. Using the pure joy of playing football as the background, the tournament aims to impress upon children the importance of teamwork and the awareness about Mother Nature and ecology with global warming and climate change.

All-India Inter-Academy Tournament in Durgapur

The Mohun Bagan-SAIL Football Academy will organise the first-ever All-India Inter-Academy Football Tournament later this month. Durgapur in West Bengal will host the tournament, which will be played from November 19 to 27 with eight renowned football academies from across India taking part.

The Academies which are set to take part are hosts Mohun Bagan SAIL Football Academy (Durgapur), Tata Football Academy (Jamshedpur), Sesa Football Academy (Goa), Sambalpur Football Academy (Orissa), JCT Football Academy (Phagwara, Punjab), Dehradun Football School (Uttarakhand), Kenkre Football Academy (Mumbai), Bangalore Football School (Karnataka).

The eight participating football academies will be split into two groups of four teams each with the top two moving into the semifinals to be played on November 25, while the final will be played on November 27. The semifinals and final of the tournament will be telecast live by Bengali channel 'R Plus'.

The tournament will be good exposure for young aspiring footballers from across India at the youth level. There is sadly a lack of competitions at this level.

I-League 2 - Group B: Md Sporting & Ar-Hima qualify

Mohammedan Sporting Club and Ar-Hima FC have topped the preliminary Group B in the 2nd Division I-League to qualify for the final round of the league to be played in Shillong.

The matches were played in Jamshedpur at the JRD Tata sports complex and the Keenan Stadium. Former I-League side Mohammedan Sporting didn't face too many problems in topping the group, but behind them four teams still had a chance to go through ahead of the last round of matches. In the end Ar-Hima FC from Shillong had a better goal difference then Kenkre FC and Josco FC to go through as all three sides finished on 10 points.

The surprise of the preliminary round is that Sesa Football Academy did not make it from this group or rather that they were out of contention before the final round of matches and they finished a lowly sixth, while Malabar United FC only finished fifth, both sides who last year played in the final round of the 2.Division.

Kenkre FC's maiden 2nd Division I-League appearance

Mumbai's Kenkre Football Club won this seasons Maharashtra State League for the first time and by winning the state league they qualified for the 2nd Division I-League. And this will mark their maiden entry into the national league system when they play their opening Group B match against Josco FC on April 4 in Jamshedpur.

Kenkre's have come a long way since their formation as a football academy in 2000, which in those starting days was more a football training centre then anything else. It is named after 'Adib Krishna Sinai Kenkre', a former footballer and coach who has worked with numerous clubs and institutions in Mumbai.

The Club was formed with the intention of showcasing young talent, produced through an Academy structure, that are believed to be the new crop of Indian football players. Thus, the club is the fruition of all the hard work and dedication put into the Academy and it shows a path of development for players from being in an Academy to play for a professional outfit.

A number of the players in the Kenkre FC squad have come through their own Academy system with the club testing new waters by playing in the 2nd Division I-League this season. If they will be able to fulfil their ambitions in the first try will have to be seen.

Kenkre's 'Coach the Coaches' course

Mumbai's Kenkre Football Club will organise a 'Coach the Coaches' course with renowned youth coaches instructor Horst Wein from April 22 to 24 at their Goans Sports Ground facility in Churchgate. The course is open to youth coaches from across India, who would have to pay a course fee of Rs. 4,000 which includes coaching material, books, CD's and more. The participants would get a course certificate at the end and as there are limited number of seats, the course is on a first come, first serve basis.

The main theme of the course will be 'Game Intelligence' something which Horst Wein has been preaching around the world as he says developing game intelligence in children is crucial to make them better football players. A key element in modern day football with the game getting more and more complex.

German Horst Wein, now based in Barcelona, has been involved in recycling the knowledge of football coaches in over 54 countries around the world. He has been involved in working with some of the world's biggest clubs including FC Barcelona, FC Arsenal, Inter Milan, Club de America (Mexico), FC Schalke 04, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, FC Villarreal, etc.

Horst Wein has authored over 34 football books and works closely in developing football in many of the top European countries besides often visiting south and central America for coaches education.

This would be Horst's second visit to India after visiting the Kenkre Football Academy in November last year, where Horst got a first hand feel of youth football in India and Kenkre got to see what Horst's methods are all about. It is surely a useful course for coaches willing to learn more on how to train kids!

Mumbai's Kenkre FC learn from Horst Wein

German Horst Wein after his 10 days at the Kenkre Football Academy & Kenkre Football Club in Mumbai said, "The future of Indian football relies on restructuring its youth football competitions." A statement which sums up what Horst has been teaching around the world what needs to be done to give youngsters the best possible football education to become professionals. And I am happy that I was able to bring Horst to Mumbai down to teach Indian coaches the latest in coaches education.

"The full game played by children of less than 14 years of age is the cancer of Indian Football." This is a critical statement which was expressed by Horst Wein, perhaps the foremost mentor of youth football coaches in the world, at a conference organized by Kenkre FC. The FIH Master Coach has schooled coaches in 54 countries and has written 33 sport-related textbooks, some of them related to football like his bestseller "DEVELOPING YOUTH FOOTBALL PLAYERS". For too long the rush to play the full game has obstructed the natural development of young players in India.

But not only India faces a dilemma in developing young football. Many other countries do have the same problem without having resolved it yet. As a first solution to cure Indian football and to improve its performance levels on the long run youth football has to look out for a new road instead of using without much thoughts the bumpy roads of the past where the progress is limited. Restructuring grass-root football (which actually is a copy of adult football) is a must, scrapping the eleven a side competition completely for the children!

No money is needed for scrapping the 11-a-side game completely from the competition calendar, only a different philosophy of developing the game from the grass root level. Instead of 11 against 11 Mini Football with only 3 players in each team, for 10 years old 5-a-side Football (like it happens in Brazil) and for 11 and 12 years old players 7-a-side and finally with 13 years 8-a-side Football should become the masters (instead of the instructors) with the kids discovering the secrets and objectives of these simplified modifications of football....

India should re-think the way children are approached step by step to the complexity and difficulty of the game. Actually the schools and club follow the same model of teaching the game as 60 years ago! India has to learn that youth coaching is a specialized affair and that Football needs urgently specialists to deal with the developing child. It's quite reasonable to conceive that young children cannot be taught and coached to play the game in a manner that is meant for adults. Knowing the problem is the first step to resolve it. Indian's youth football competitions should become like the shoes of the kids – they should fit them perfectly. But unfortunately this has never been the case in India.

An optimal teaching and learning model should be used as a base in all academies to help to unlock and develop best the innate potential of the Indian youth. But as long as the India continues to oblige the 10 to 13 year old kids to play the full game on the big field no progress will be made as seen in the past 30 years.

The secret behind the strength of Brazil's fine football players is that none of them ever played before 11 years on the big fields which are reserved for the adults only. Playing on a much smaller field (20 x 40 meters) with 4 players and one goalkeeper just for fun and without coaches allows the youngsters to develop their ability naturally. The final product is the unparalleled creativity and skill of the kids which amaze the football world.

When actually the Football Associations of India does what it has done always in the past it will never reach any further. The traditional way of thinking prevents India from using the most efficient ways available in these days in approaching kids to the complexity and difficulty of the game– a natural step-by-step approach. India's traditional coaching methods are hindering the child's learning in expressing their creativity. There is too much control by the coaches, too much drill work which is killing the imagination and fantasy of the kids, no time to experiment to do something different, not being allowed to be different and too much correction by the coaches. All these are obstacles that inhibit the expression of the creative potential within each child.

Learning in football must be extended, more frequently offering the possibility to think and to learn incidentally and in divergent ways – until the coaches agree that the well structured simplified game of football should become the teacher and not the coach.

All over and also in Asia many coaches think for their players, instead of stimulating them to think for themselves. Instead of presenting fishes to the young players, their parents, teachers or coaches should teach them how to fish.

Prepubescent children should never play the same game as the adults. They must be exposed in each evolutional stage to a tailor-made competition which makes sure they perceive competence whilst playing the game. Thus when playing first Mini Football, then 5-, 7- and finally 8 –a side Football at different age levels the children will have by far more successful actions than playing only the traditional 11 a-side game, which has created for too long wrong habits to children.

Being aware of the success when playing these tailor-made football competitions is a great motivator for the youth to progress even further. Each child should feel at any time a certain degree of capacity and competence. But that is not the case when the child is obliged to play the same game as the adults. It fails more often than it succeeds. Instead of enjoyment and feeling capable frustration is experimented.

Besides investing heavily in their professional team, coaches of Kenkre FC recommends after the visit of Horst Wein that India shouldn't forget the real roots of its problem: making sure a brighter future of its football through the use of an Indian Football Development Model which is using age-orientated coaching methods to develop the younger generations. This optimal teaching and learning model which Horst Wein introduced so successfully 20 years ago in Spanish football, has been now adapted by the coaches of Kenkre FC and hopefully other Indian youth clubs / academies to assure future successes of Indian football.

The 'Araldite' Kenkre Football Academy from Mumbai has invited world renowned football coach Horst Wein to train for a change 'Coaches' at the Academy. Adib Kenkre founder of the Kenkre Football Academy has always emphasized the lack of quality coaches in India to train its budding talent in a professional manner. So this Diwali vacation all the coaches at Kenkre Football Academy have sacrificed their time and will be utilizing it to learn the latest techniques of training kids.

Adib Kenkre said, "We have a group of 25-30 coaches who will be under the guidance of Horst Wein for a period of 10 days. He will impart wealth of knowledge to them."
