VIDEO: East Bengal 4-3 Kalighat MS highlights

Here are the match highlights by Bengali sports program XtraTime from yesterday's 4-3 thriller between East Bengal Club & Kalighat Milan Sangha at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri.

34th Federation Cup - Day 7: East Bengal win thriller, qualify for semifinals!

The 34th Federation Cup had its seventh and final match day of the quarterfinal group stage with Group C deciding which team would follow the Goan trio of Dempo SC, Churchill Brothers SC and Salgaocar FC into the semifinals. In the end last year finalist East Bengal Club prevailed with a 4-3 win against Kalighat Milan Sangha, while ONGC defeated Sporting Clube de Goa 2-1 to end their dreams of a all Goa semifinal.

Group C

ONGC 2-1 Sporting Clube de Goa - Goals: 1-0 David Lalrinmuana (30'), 1-1 Dawson Fernandes (62'), 2-1 Tarif Ahmed (89')

I-League promoted ONGC scored a 2-1 upset win against Sporting Clube de Goa in their final Group C match at Siliguri's SSB ground in the 34th Federation Cup. With this win ONGC finished second with six points, ahead of Sporting Club de Goa on four points.

ONGC's David Lalrinmuana scored from a freekick to give his side a 30th minute lead early before Dawson Fernandes scored a penalty in the 62nd minute to draw level for Sporting Clube. Striker Tarif Ahmed found the mark a minute from time to ensure the win for the Oilmen.

East Bengal Club 4-3 Kalighat Milan Sangha - Goals: 0-1 James Giblee (11'), 0-2 Tanmoy Kundu (15'), 1-2,2-2 Manandeep Singh (22',28'), 2-3 Iyikwobe Christopher Chizoba (40'), 3-3,4-3 Chidi Edeh (45+2' pen, 59' pen)

Last year finalists East Bengal Club had to come back from two goals down in their 4-3 win against Kolkata rivals Kalighat Milan Sangha in their third and final Group C match to finish their engagements on seven points to top the group to fix a semifinal against Churchill Brothers SC.

Making a haphazard beginning quite contrary to its approach East Bengal conceded two goals within the first 15 minutes. Kalighat Milan Sangha enjoyed the confusion in the red-and-gold defence of its famed opponent as Liberian James Giblee and captain Tanmoy Kundu found the target in tandem in the 11th and 15th minutes. In absence of regular centre-backs Uga Okpara and Gurwinder Singh, the backline had massive problems.

East Bengal like a champion side recovered from the initial setback as its young striker Manandeep Singh scored two quick goals in the 22nd and 28th minutes to
restore parity. But Kalighat MS rebounded with greater intensity and regained the lead off a nice solo from striker Iyikwobe Christopher Chizoba in the 40th minute though they couldn't take the 3-2 lead into the break as Nigerian striker Chidi Edeh equalised in injury time through a penalty after Chidi had been brought down by the Kalighat goalkeeper Souvik Mondal.

East Bengal coach Trevor Morgan reacted at the break and brought on Okpara and Gurwinder in place of Arnab Mondal and Raju Gaikwad, which brought back the stability in defence and allowed them to attack in search for the winner. East Bengal scored their fourth through their second penalty of the match when referee Rahul D'Sa hauled up Kalighat MS defender Babu Mondal for an infringement on Chidi inside the
box. The Nigerian striker successfully converted from the spot again to help the red-and-gold make it to the last-four stage. It stayed 4-3 until the end.

34th Federation Cup - Day 5: Dempo qualify for semis, Group C wide open

The 34th edition of the Federation Cup entered match day three for the Group A teams, while for the Group C teams it was the second round today. In Group A favourites Dempo SC topped the group and moved into the semifinals, while in Group C three teams still have a chance to reach the semifinals.

Group A

Pailan Arrows 2-1 Shillong Lajong FC - Goals: 1-0 Holicharan Narzary (17'), 1-1 Ebi Theophilus Sukore (21'), 2-1 Prabir Das (67')

After two draws the Pailan Arrows, the AIFF Developmental side, finished their 34th Federation Cup engagements with a 2-1 victory against Shillong Lajong FC at the JRD Sports Complex to finish second behind Dempo SC.

Holicharan Narzary scored off a rebound to give the Arrows a 17th minute, but the joy was short-lived as four minutes later Lajong striker Ebi Sukore equalised. It remained 1-1 at the break.

Post the breather the Arrows looked much more threatening in the final third. With Alwyn George now in the picture, the Arrows caused a lot of trouble for the Lajong back four. Their attacks stemmed from the flanks and in the 67th minute Prabir Das met one such floater from the left wing to give Arrows the much needed advantage. It stayed 2-1 until the end.

Mumbai FC 0-4 Dempo SC - Goals: 0-1 Clifford Miranda (23'), 0-2,0-3,0-4 Koko Sakibo (43',79',90')

Former champions Dempo SC booked their ticket to the semifinals of the 34th Federation Cup after handing Mumbai FC a 4-0 trashing in the final Group A match at the Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur.

Clifford Miranda opened the scoring for the Goans in the 23rd minute of a Koko Sakibo pass in the 23rd minute to score his third in as many matches. Then the Nigerian doubled the lead with two minutes to go in the first session. Sakibo would complete his hattrick with two late goals in the 79th and 90th minute to seal Dempo's passage into the semifinals.

The Goans topped their group with seven points from three matches and now await the winner of Group D which will be decided between Salgaocar FC and Pune FC tomorrow.

Group C

Kalighat Milan Sangha 2-3 Sporting Clube de Goa - Goals: 0-1 Mackroy Peixoto (12'), 1-1,2-3 Iyikwobe Christopher Chizoba (38',72'), 1-2,1-3 Dawson Fernandes (43',45+1')

Sporting Clube de Goa scored a 3-2 win against newcomers Kalighat Milan Sangha at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri. With the win Sporting Clube moved to four points, while Kalighat MS remain without a point.

Sporting Clube de Goa took a 12th minute lead through a Mackroy Peixoto goal, but Kalighat Milan Sangha hit back with Iyikwobe Christopher Chizoba equalising in the 38th minute. Their joy was short-lived as Dawson Fernandes scored two goals in three minutes in the 43th and 45th+1 minute to give Sporting Clube a comfortable 3-1 half-time lead.

But the Goans made the match unnecessarily exciting in the second session as they allowed Kalighat MS back into the game as Iyikwobe Christopher Chizoba scored his second of the afternoon in the 72nd minute. It remained tense until the end with Sporting Clube winning the match 3-2 to move tofour points from to matches and with a real chance to qualify for the semifinals.

East Bengal Club 2-1 ONGC - Goals: 0-1 Katsumi Yusa (9'), 1-1 Chidi Edeh (45+2'), 2-1 Manandeep Singh (82')

Kolkata giants East Bengal Club scored a 2-1 victory against a 10-men ONGC in their Federation Cup Group C match at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri.

East Bengal, who had been held to a 1-1 draw against Sporting Clube de Goa in the first round, paid the price of a slow start as ONGC impressed with speedy attacks through the flanks, one of which fetched them the ninth-minute lead when Katsumi Yusa slotted home making the most of a sharp pass from right-half Sorabuddin Mollick. But East Bengal reorganised its midfield thereafter, attacked and found the equaliser off a Chidi Edeh free-kick in the first half injury-time.

East Bengal emerged a transformed unit after the break and put pressure on ONGC, but the Oilmen put a strict vigil at the back and managed to hold off the East Bengal attacks till Yusa’s expulsion in the 78th minute. Manandeep Singh, who came in for Subodh Kumar in the 73rd minute, played the role of a super-sub to give East Bengal the winner in the 82nd minute and three crucial points in the fight for a semifinal spot.

34th Federation Cup - Day 3: Dempo win, Sporting Clube hold East Bengal while ONGC win big

The 34th edition of the Federation Cup entered match day two for the Group A teams, while for the Group C teams it was the opening round today. In Group A favourites Dempo SC are now top of the group after their win against Lajong FC, while in Group C Sporting Clube de Goa held favourites East Bengal Club to a draw and ONGC moved to the top of the table with a 5-1 trashing of newcomers Kalighat Milan Sangha.

Group A

Pailan Arrows 2-2 Mumbai FC - Goals: 0-1,1-2 N.D. Opara (12',62'), 1-1 Dhanpal Ganeshan (45'), 2-2 Deepak Devrani (78')

The Pailan Arrows came back twice in the game to draw Mumbai FC two-all for their second draw of the tournament in the 34th Federation at the Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur. It leave the Arrows in third place with two points and Mumbai FC in last with their first point of the tournament.

As in the simultaneously played match at the JRD Sports Complex, at the Keenan Stadium the heavy ground conditions forced both teams to play the aerial ball and Mumbai FC seemed to cope better initially as their Nigerian striker N.D. Opara gave them a 12th minute lead. Just when Mumbai FC looked to take their lead into half-time, Dhanpal Ganeshan equalised for the AIFF Developmental side.

After the break it was again N.D. Opara headed home the second goal in the 62nd minute, but the Arrows once more came back as in the 78th minute substitute Deepak Devrani slotted home comfortably from a Alwyn George corner.

Dempo SC 1-0 Shillong Lajong FC - Goals: 1-0 Clifford Miranda (45')

I-League champions Dempo SC returned to winning ways with a 1-0 win through a Clifford Miranda goal against Shillong Lajong FC at the JRD Sports Complex in Jamshedpur. With the win Dempo are now top of Group A with four points and the best chances to make it into the semifinals, while Shillong Lajong FC remain on three points.

The Match was difficult for both sides due to the terrible underfoot conditions, which both teams criticized after the match. The only goal of the match came in the 45th minute when Indian international Clifford Miranda curled in a free-kick, his second of the tournament.

Group C

ONGC 5-1 Kalighat Milan Sangha - Goals: 0-1 James Giblee (15'), 1-1 Sachin Gawas (31'), 2-1,3-1 Oneyama Eke (37',40'), 4-1,5-1 Katsumi Yusa (80',89')

I-League promoted ONGC from Mumbai had to go a goal down against Fed Cup newcomers Kalighat Milan Sangha before trashing the 2nd Division I-League side 5-1 at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri. With this win and the draw in the other group match ONGC are top after the first round.

Tt was the Kolkata side who took a 15th minute lead through a James Giblee goal, but thereafter the Oilmen were able to turn things around in style scoring three goals in nine minutes. First Sachin Gawas equalised in the 31st minute before new African striker Oneyama Eke scored a double in the 37th and 40th minute to give ONGC a 3-1 lead at the break.

After the break the match lost steam but ONGC would score two more towards the end of the match through their Japanese recruit Katsumi Yusa in the 80th and 89th minute.

Sporting Clube de Goa 1-1 East Bengal Club - Goals: 0-1 Chidi Edeh (9' pen), 1-1 Victorino Fernandes (82')

Sporting Clube de Goa held title contenders East Bengal Club to a one-all draw in their opening Group C match at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri. An early Chidi Edeh penalty was egalised by young Victorino Fernandes for the Goans towards the end.

The rains played their part in the match as the Goans took their time to settle down which East Bengal used to their advantage, then Penn Ikechukwu Orji was brought down early in the box and it was Chidi Edeh who scored from the spot following the protest of Sporting Clube players against the decision.

East Bengal continued to control things, but didn't add another goal which brought Sporting Clube de Goa back into the match. It was Cameroonian striker Bertrand Benik Tequwa Bong who had a couple of chances before substitute Victorino Fernandes scored of a fine solo effort in the 82nd minute. Only a few minutes later Mehtab Hossain was given the marching orders for a second yellow card which dended East Bengal's late push as the match ended in a one-all draw.

I-League Division 2: Heading for a close Finale

The Final Round of the I-League Division 2 has two rounds to play until the final match on April 17 between United Sikkim FC and Mohammedan Sporting Club in Gangtok with these two clubs besides ONGC fighting for the two promotion spots. Whoever put the schedule together couldn't have done a better top with a real final likely next Tuesday.

Currently last seasons relegated ONGC from Mumbai sit on top of the Division 2 table with 20 points closely followed by Mohammedan Sporting Club on 19 points and United Sikkim FC on 18 points. The four other teams are out of the running for a promotion spot.

Especially for Royal Wahingdoh FC on 16 points it is annoying then the Shillong club had made a substitution blunder in their first-leg match against ONGC bringing on four foreigners which turned a 4-1 win into a 0-3 loss, which has helped ONGC to go to the top of the league table. Otherwise the promotion race could have been a four team affair.

The other participating teams in the final round of the I-League Division 2 are Vasco SC (13 pts), Kalighat Milan Sangha (10 pts) and Aizawl FC (4 pts).

REMAINING FIXTURES

13-Apr-2012: Kalighat Milan Sangha - Royal Wahingdoh FC

I-League Division 2: It's Decision Time

The second and final-leg of the Final Round of the I-League Division 2 will kick-off tomorrow in Gangtok with the last league match to be played on April 17. Thereafter we will know who has gotten promoted to the first tier of the I-League.

After the first six matches United Sikkim FC are in pole position with 13 points ahead of Mohammedan Sporting Club (12 pts), who occupy the other I-League promotion spot ahead of ONGC (11 pts), Royal Wahingdoh FC (10 pts), Vasco SC (6 pts), Kalighat Milan Sangha (5 pts) and Aizawl FC (1 pt).

Currently it looks like it will be a close contest amongst the top four teams - USFC, Md Sporting, ONGC & RWFC - though Vasco SC and Kalighat MS have a chance in theory if they win all or most of their matches with the top four dropping a number of points.

United Sikkim FC go into the final six matches at home in Gangtok as the big favourites, then they are top of the I-League Division 2 and home advantage should give them a competitive edge over their opponents.

But as most of you will know, football is an unpredictable game; so let the league progress for us to find out who finally does get promoted.

I-League Division 2: United Sikkim lead after first-leg

The first-leg of the Final Round of the I-League Division 2 ended earlier today in Siliguri after 18 of the 36 matches played. The second-leg will kick-off in Sikkim's capital Gangtok on March 29 with the final league match to be played on April 17.

Royal Wahingdoh FC could have been at the top of the table along with United Sikkim FC, but a substitution mistake in their 4-1 victory against ONGC by playing a fourth foreigner late in injury time robbed them of the three points. I-League Division 2: Final Round kicks-off, who are favourites?

The Final Round of the I-League Division 2 will kick-off later today in Siliguri and run until April 17 in two phases to be played first in Siliguri (West Bengal) and then Gangtok (Sikkim). Seven teams are taking part with ONGC being last seasons relegated I-League side, while Aizwal FC, United Sikkim FC, Royal Wahingdoh FC, Kalighat Milan Sangha, Mohammedan Sporting Club and Vasco SC qualified for the final round from the 23 teams, three groups preliminary round.

Here the list of complete I-League Division 2: Final Round Fixtures!

But are there any favourites for the two I-League promotion spots?

Honestly it is difficult to say, then seeded ONGC have been involved in very little football in this season so far, the three preliminary round groups were of different strengths and everyone starts from zero again in Siliguri.

The first two/three matches should show which way the journey could go, but with the clubs set to play 12 matches over two legs it could even out and the strongest sides should be able to get through.

If one goes by experience and strength then ONGC, Mohammedan Sporting Club, United Sikkim FC and Vasco SC have an edge over the other sides; then Royal Wahingdoh FC failed miserably in last years final round and for Aizawl FC and Kalighat Milan Sangha it is the first time that they are playing at this national stage.

And to finish off, United Sikkim FC surely have home advantage in the second-leg which will be played at the Paljor Stadium in Gangtok with Siliguri another base that USFC wants to use in the future.

The matches on the opening day are ONGC, Mumbai vs Aizawl FC and United Sikkim FC vs Vasco SC.
