Bordoloi Trophy kicks-off on Friday in Guwahati

The 61st edition of the Bharat Ratna Lokapriya Bordoloi Trophy in Guwahati was once the biggest tournament of the Northeast with even the Kolkata Maidan giants coming to the tournament and teams who were part of the old NFL (now I-League). But like many tournament across the country with the I-League being played for most of the season these top teams cannot make a trip to Guwahati.

The tournament used to also attract teams from abroad mainly from Thailand, Bangladesh and Nepal; but this year it will be completely Northeast affair as the organisers the Guwahati Sports Association is facing financial problems due to which clubs from the I-League Division 2 cannot be contracted to participate.

Still three teams from Shillong - Royal Wahingdoh FC, Langsning FC, Rangdajied FC; besides Nagaland Police, Oil India Limited and Assam Rifles plus six local teams from Guwahati will participate.

The tournament would kick-off on Friday with all matches set to be played at Guwahati's Nehru Stadium.

Royal Wahingdoh FC visited Germany in May 2012

Shillong-based I-League Division 2 side Royal Wahingdoh FC last month underwent a three week intensive training in Windeck-Dattenfeld, Germany under the watchful eyes of coach Volker Hofferbert, who has been appointed as the club coach a few days ago. The training of Hofferbert impressed the RWFC management, now he is in Shillong to coach the team.

The 18 member RWFC contingent were in Germany from 4 to 25 May and during this time played three friendly games against Germania Windeck (1st & 2nd team) and SV Eitorf. The RWFC players comprised a mix of juniors and seniors players as part of the clubs aim of exposure for their players.

RWFC also visited the fan project of Bundesliga side 1.FC Köln (FC Cologne) and shared in the excitement with fans during FC Cologne's final home match versus FC Bayern Munich. Sadly though for FC Cologne, the 1-4 loss meant a double blow as they failed to avoid relegation apart from already having to lose Lukas Podolski to FC Arsenal.

The team visited the Bodelschwingh Gymnasium in Windeck-Herchen where they interacted with the school students and also had a training demonstration apart from a lovely music concert at the same venue. The Mayor of Windeck also paid a visit to the team and wished them success in the training as well in their future.

Sightseeing tours to Cologne and Bonn also permitted the footballers from India to see a different world and interact with the as they termed 'friendly Germans'.

Nandakumar Singh has also joined the teams coaching staff.

While the aim for the season remains promotion to the I-League, under the new coach Hofferbert Royal Wahingdoh FC made a successful start into the 2012 Shillong Premier League which kicked-off today with a 1-0 victory against Nangkiew Irat. Jackichand Singh scored the winner a minute from time off a penalty.

63 year old Volker Hofferbert brings a wealth of experience from around the world to Shillong having coached in Brazil, Iceland, Indonesia, Laos, Mexico, Romania and Yemen besides having been a professor at the Cologne Sports University in Germany.

The signing of Hofferbert follows a visit by Royal Wahingdoh FC in May 2012 to Germany in which the clubs team had trained for the first time on European soil.

I-League Division 2: Heading for a close Finale

The Final Round of the I-League Division 2 has two rounds to play until the final match on April 17 between United Sikkim FC and Mohammedan Sporting Club in Gangtok with these two clubs besides ONGC fighting for the two promotion spots. Whoever put the schedule together couldn't have done a better top with a real final likely next Tuesday.

Currently last seasons relegated ONGC from Mumbai sit on top of the Division 2 table with 20 points closely followed by Mohammedan Sporting Club on 19 points and United Sikkim FC on 18 points. The four other teams are out of the running for a promotion spot.

Especially for Royal Wahingdoh FC on 16 points it is annoying then the Shillong club had made a substitution blunder in their first-leg match against ONGC bringing on four foreigners which turned a 4-1 win into a 0-3 loss, which has helped ONGC to go to the top of the league table. Otherwise the promotion race could have been a four team affair.

The other participating teams in the final round of the I-League Division 2 are Vasco SC (13 pts), Kalighat Milan Sangha (10 pts) and Aizawl FC (4 pts).

REMAINING FIXTURES

13-Apr-2012: Kalighat Milan Sangha - Royal Wahingdoh FC

I-League Division 2: It's Decision Time

The second and final-leg of the Final Round of the I-League Division 2 will kick-off tomorrow in Gangtok with the last league match to be played on April 17. Thereafter we will know who has gotten promoted to the first tier of the I-League.

After the first six matches United Sikkim FC are in pole position with 13 points ahead of Mohammedan Sporting Club (12 pts), who occupy the other I-League promotion spot ahead of ONGC (11 pts), Royal Wahingdoh FC (10 pts), Vasco SC (6 pts), Kalighat Milan Sangha (5 pts) and Aizawl FC (1 pt).

Currently it looks like it will be a close contest amongst the top four teams - USFC, Md Sporting, ONGC & RWFC - though Vasco SC and Kalighat MS have a chance in theory if they win all or most of their matches with the top four dropping a number of points.

United Sikkim FC go into the final six matches at home in Gangtok as the big favourites, then they are top of the I-League Division 2 and home advantage should give them a competitive edge over their opponents.

But as most of you will know, football is an unpredictable game; so let the league progress for us to find out who finally does get promoted.

I-League Division 2: United Sikkim lead after first-leg

The first-leg of the Final Round of the I-League Division 2 ended earlier today in Siliguri after 18 of the 36 matches played. The second-leg will kick-off in Sikkim's capital Gangtok on March 29 with the final league match to be played on April 17.

Royal Wahingdoh FC could have been at the top of the table along with United Sikkim FC, but a substitution mistake in their 4-1 victory against ONGC by playing a fourth foreigner late in injury time robbed them of the three points. I-League Division 2: Royal Wahingdoh punished, ONGC get points

The organising committee of the I-League Division 2 has punished Royal Wahingdoh FC for fielding a fourth foreigner in their 4-1 victory against Mumbai's ONGC on March 16 in a match in Siliguri. ONGC has now been awarded a 3-0 win and all three points.

This decision comes after ONGC had handed in a formal protest to the match commissioner following the match about the fourth player coming onto the pitch late in injury time, which is against the regulations of the league. The regulations allow clubs to sign 3+1 foreigner (3 from anywhere in the world plus one Asian), but only three of the four foreigners can be on the pitch at the same.

For Royal Wahingdoh FC the mistake could prove costly in the promotion race as it changes the points table. After the verdict ONGC are now second with 10 points from five matches, while Royal Wahingdoh FC drop to fourth with only four points from five matches.

I-League Division 2: Did Royal Wahingdoh FC play 4 Foreigners?

It seems that the second division of the I-League is tainted by controversies this season, but are the necessary actions being taken? Earlier there had been allegations of match fixing in the preliminary round groups in Silchar and Cuttack with Gauhati Town Club taking the drastic step of disbanding their senior team.

Now in yesterday's match between Royal Wahingdoh FC from Shillong and Mumbai's ONGC which RWFC won 4-1 the side from Meghalaya made a late substitution with African striker Perry S. Koli coming on for I. Seityasen Singh from Manipur. That meant that four foreigners where on the field in injury time of the game with Africans Kareem Omolaja Nurain and Beekay Bawar along with Bhutanese striker Chencho C. already on the pitch.

ONGC had to complain to the fourth official and the match commissioner M.G Suvarna about the incidence who like the RWFC officials did not realise the mistake. ONGC also made a written complaint post-match to the match commissioner.

An interesting fact is that the official website of Royal Wahingdoh FC lists Chencho as an Indian national born in Sikkim. But the striker Chencho has surely represented Bhutan in international competitions.

The rule for the I-League Division 2 like in the top tier of the I-League is that clubs can sign 3 foreigners from anywhere in the world plus one Asian with three of these four foreigners allowed to be on the pitch at any given time, meaning if a foreigner from the 3+1 comes on, another one has to go off.

The question is under what nationality did RWFC register Chencho with the AIFF for the I-League Division 2? What passport or passports does the striker current hold? And have RWFC play foreigners in earlier matches?

Loads of questions to be answered...

I-League Division 2: Final Round kicks-off, who are favourites?

The Final Round of the I-League Division 2 will kick-off later today in Siliguri and run until April 17 in two phases to be played first in Siliguri (West Bengal) and then Gangtok (Sikkim). Seven teams are taking part with ONGC being last seasons relegated I-League side, while Aizwal FC, United Sikkim FC, Royal Wahingdoh FC, Kalighat Milan Sangha, Mohammedan Sporting Club and Vasco SC qualified for the final round from the 23 teams, three groups preliminary round.

Here the list of complete I-League Division 2: Final Round Fixtures!

But are there any favourites for the two I-League promotion spots?

Honestly it is difficult to say, then seeded ONGC have been involved in very little football in this season so far, the three preliminary round groups were of different strengths and everyone starts from zero again in Siliguri.

The first two/three matches should show which way the journey could go, but with the clubs set to play 12 matches over two legs it could even out and the strongest sides should be able to get through.

If one goes by experience and strength then ONGC, Mohammedan Sporting Club, United Sikkim FC and Vasco SC have an edge over the other sides; then Royal Wahingdoh FC failed miserably in last years final round and for Aizawl FC and Kalighat Milan Sangha it is the first time that they are playing at this national stage.

And to finish off, United Sikkim FC surely have home advantage in the second-leg which will be played at the Paljor Stadium in Gangtok with Siliguri another base that USFC wants to use in the future.

The matches on the opening day are ONGC, Mumbai vs Aizawl FC and United Sikkim FC vs Vasco SC.

The Final Round of the I-League Division 2 will be played from March 5 to April 17 in two phases in Siliguri (West Bengal) and Gangtok (Sikkim). This means for the first time in the 2nd Division's history all sides will be facing each other twice to decide which two sides get promoted to the I-League 2012/13.

Besides last seasons relegated ONGC from Mumbai the six teams who have qualified from the 23 team preliminary round are United Sikkim FC, Aizawl FC, Royal Wahingdoh FC, Kalighat Milan Sangha, Mohammedan Sporting Club and Vasco SC.

33rd Federation Cup: A look back at the tournament

The 33rd edition of the Federation Cup (India's version of the FA Cup) was held from September 17 to 29 in Kolkata and Pune. Salgaocar emerged as champions yesterday by beating twice defending champions East Bengal Club 3-1 at the Saltlake Stadium in Kolkata.

The Federation Cup is India's premier national knockout tournament, but this years competition will surely not be remembered as one of the best. The timing will have been a major issues for most clubs as it came as sort of pre-season tournament and some teams looked under-prepared.

The most of all preliminary groups was Group A were the Shillong sides Lajong FC and Royal Wahingdoh FC upset their more famed rivals in record champions Mohun Bagan AC and Goan giants Churchill Brothers SC. Otherwise the group stage went mainly as per plans as the favourites won the three other groups.

Salgaocar SC were deserving champions as they were the most consistent of the participating clubs with especially their defence being rock solid and conceding only one goal throughout the tournament, a penalty in the final against East Bengal.

Salgaocar's Chidi Edeh and Henry Antchouet from Churchill Brothers SC top-scored in this edition of the Fed Cup with four goals a piece.
